Scientist at Work Blog: For the Social Wrasse, News, Good and Bad

Luiz Rocha, the curator of ichthyology at the California Academy of Sciences, writes from Belize, where he conducts research on one of the world?s most endangered fish, social wrasse.

Saturday, Dec. 15

After hours on airplanes and in airports ? with a last leg by boat ? I finally arrived at Carrie Bow Key. It was late afternoon and there was no time to dive. But what I found on the Pelican Keys early the next morning was not encouraging. Invasive lionfish lurked around the islands. And after catching a few of them, I went for a walk in the mangroves and found trash strewn along the shore.

I had come to Belize to assess the potential threats to a small, but important, member of the reef ecosystem. And by Day 2, I had found two major threats to the social wrasse.

Now for the good news: The lionfish population is not large. And I saw many social wrasses, although they were only juveniles and females. Their schools were, as expected, high in the water column feeding on plankton, dutifully capturing nutrients from the water and transferring them to the reef.

The few lionfish that our team observed seemed to prefer a high-relief habitat with big rocks and overhangs. Those types of habitats are hard to find here.

We captured two lionfish and both of their stomachs were empty, but they were well-nourished. We may have just been unlucky, catching them between meals. Of course, we will keep capturing more lionfish during the next few days.

Many islands in the Caribbean are doing a good job in keeping the lionfish population in check. They are quite tasty once you get past the poisonous spines and good marketing has made them popular in restaurants. There are now lionfish tournaments and in some places even tourists are encouraged to spear them. But none of this will be enough to eradicate the species. Lionfish have very broad habitat requirements and some have been spotted from submersibles as deep as 1,000 feet. Even if divers control them at shallow depths there will always be more deeper down.

Recognizing that humans can?t possibly catch all of these new invaders, some dive shops are resorting to a slightly more controversial tact. In Mexico, Barbados and a few other places in the Caribbean, people are ?training? groupers, sharks, morays and other large reef fish to eat lionfish.

While at first this practice seems to be the logical thing to do, there is no evidence that these larger fish are actively trying to catch live lionfish. Rather, they are learning that divers in the water mean ?free handouts,? and becoming very aggressive when divers don?t give them their lionfish snack.

Whether it?s effective to try to sic fish on fish is unclear, but the strategy remains a heavily debated topic in the scientific literature. And regardless of our efforts to control this spiny exotic, it?s clear that the lionfish is here to stay. And it?s up to us to figure out what they are doing to their new home because maybe then we can devise better ways to mitigate their impact on the reef and the social wrasse.

Ovarian Cancer - Questions and Answers - Revista Women's Health

What is ovarian cancer?

Ovarian cancer is cancer that starts in the ovaries, the pair of female reproductive organs located in the pelvis. The ovaries have two functions: to produce eggs and female hormones (chemicals that control the way certain cells or organs function). Ovarian cancer occurs when cells in the ovary become abnormal and divide without control or order. Cancer cells can invade and destroy the tissue around them. They can also extend away from the tumor and to form new tumors in other body parts.

Who is at risk?

It is estimated that in the United States, more than 25,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1999 and more than 14,000 die from the disease. The exact causes of ovarian cancer are unknown. However, studies show that the following factors may increase the likelihood of developing this disease:

Family history. The first-degree relatives (mother, daughter, sister) of a woman who has had ovarian cancer are at increased risk of developing this cancer. The risk is especially high if two or more first-degree relatives of a woman had the disease. A family history of breast cancer or colon is also associated with an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Age. The probability of developing ovarian cancer increases as a woman ages. Most ovarian cancers occur in women over age 50, with more risk for women over 60 years old.

Motherhood. Women who have never had children are more likely to develop ovarian cancer than women who have had them. In fact, the more children they had, the lower the chances of developing ovarian cancer.

Personal History. Women who have had breast cancer or colon, are more likely to develop ovarian cancer than women who have not had these diseases.

Fertility treatment. The fertility treatment with certain drugs that trigger ovulation is associated with a probability higher than average of developing ovarian cancer.

Talc. Some studies suggest that women who have used talc in the genital area for many years may have an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer. However, more research is needed to understand this potential risk factor.

Is there a test to detect ovarian cancer early?

The sooner it is detected and ovarian cancer, the better the chance for recovery. But ovarian cancer is hard to detect early. Many times, women with ovarian cancer have no symptoms or have very mild symptoms until the disease is at an advanced stage. Scientists are studying ways to detect ovarian cancer before symptoms develop.

A large-scale study, known as the study of early detection of cancer of the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian or PLCO study seeks to determine whether certain evidence will reduce the number of deaths from these cancers. The PLCO trial is currently evaluating the utility of three methods for detecting ovarian cancer.

One is a blood test that measures the level of CA-125, a substance called tumor marker found in the blood often in quantities greater than normal in women with ovarian cancer. This study is also evaluating the effectiveness of a physical examination of the ovaries and a test called a transvaginal ultrasound to detect the disease early.

Transvaginal ultrasound, also known as DVT, is a procedure used to examine the vagina, uterus, fallopian tubes, and bladder. An instrument is inserted into the vagina, and sound waves vibrate the organs inside the pelvic area. These sound waves produce echoes, which uses the computer to create a picture called a sonogram.

Does it cause any symptoms ovarian cancer?

Ovarian cancer usually shows no obvious signs or symptoms until it is advanced development. Signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer may include:

  • General abdominal discomfort or pain (gas, indigestion, pressure, swelling, bloating, cramps).
  • Nausea, diarrhea, constipation, or frequent urination.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Feeling of fullness even after a light meal.
  • Weight gain or loss without just cause.
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding.

These symptoms may be caused by ovarian cancer or by other, less serious conditions. It is important to consult your doctor about any of these symptoms.

How is ovarian cancer diagnosed?

To find the cause of symptoms, the doctor evaluates a woman?s medical history, perform a physical examination and order diagnostic tests. Some of the examinations and tests that may be useful are described below:

Pelvic exam. This includes touching the uterus, vagina, ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder and rectum to find any abnormality in their shape or size. It is usually done along with the pelvic exam Pap test (common test used to detect cervical cancer). Sometimes this test may detect ovarian cancer, but it is not a reliable way to detect or diagnose ovarian cancer.

Ultrasound. It uses high-frequency sound waves. These waves can not be heard by humans, they point to the ovaries. The pattern of the echoes they produce waves creates a picture called a sonogram. Healthy tissues, fluid-filled cysts and tumors look different on the table.

Analysis of CA-125. It consists of a blood test to measure levels of CA-125, a tumor marker in the blood is usually in amounts above normal in women with ovarian cancer.

Lower abdominal radiograph or barium enema. It is a series of x-rays of the colon and rectum. The photographs are taken after the patient is given an enema with a white, chalky solution containing barium. The barium outlines the colon and rectum on the x-ray, making it easier to see the tumor or other abnormal areas.

Computed tomography (CT scan). It is a series of detailed pictures of areas inside the body created by a computer linked to an x-ray machine.

Biopsy. Involves the removal of a tissue sample to be examined under the microscope. A pathologist examines the tissue to make a diagnosis. For tissue, the surgeon performs a laparotomy (incision to open the abdomen).

If cancer is suspected, the surgeon performs an oophorectomy (total excision of the ovary). This is important because, if cancer is present, to cut the outer layer of the ovary to simply remove a tissue sample, maybe cancer cells to escape and spread the disease.

If ovarian cancer is diagnosed, the doctor will want to learn the stage (or extent) of the disease in order to find out whether the cancer has spread and, if so, to what parts of the body. Determining the stage of the disease may involve surgery, x-rays and other methods of making detailed images, and laboratory testing. Knowing the stage of the disease helps the doctor plan treatment.

How is ovarian cancer?

Using different treatments and combinations of treatments to treat ovarian cancer. The plan of treatment for a particular patient depends on several factors, including the stage of the cancer, your age and general health.

Surgery is the treatment for most women diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Generally, ovaries, cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes are removed by an operation called a hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (surgical removal of both fallopian tubes and ovaries).

During surgery determining the stage of the disease and usually involves removing lymph nodes (small organs located along the lymph system ducts) Diaphragm tissue samples, omentum (thin tissue that covers the stomach and intestine) and other organs in the abdomen and abdominal fluid. If the cancer has spread, the surgeon usually removes much of the cancer as possible to reduce the amount of cancer that must then be treated with chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Chemotherapy is the use of anticancer drugs to kill cancer cells in the body. Most drugs used to treat ovarian cancer are given by injection into a vein (intravenous or IV). There may also be chemotherapy drugs directly into the abdomen (intraperitoneal or IP) via a catheter, a thin tube is placed through the duration of the tratamiento.

Despu?s of chemotherapy is completed, you can make a second look with surgery to examine the abdomen directly. The surgeon may remove fluid and a sample of tissue to see whether anticancer drugs have successfully removed the cancer.

Radiation therapy, also called radiotherapy, involves the use of high energy rays to kill cancer cells. Radiation therapy affects the cancer cells only in the treated area. Radiation may come from a machine (external radiation) or from radioactive liquid placed directly into the abdomen through a catheter (intraperitoneal radiation).

Are clinical trials (research studies) for patients with ovarian cancer?

Yes, clinical trials (research studies) to evaluate new ways to treat cancer are an important treatment option for many women with ovarian cancer. In some studies, all patients receive the new treatment. In others, doctors compare different therapies by giving a group of patients a promising new treatment and other standard therapy group (standard).

GH3 Best AF lens for low light wedding receptions

I think the flexibility of the zoom and autofocus would be your best bet for live events. Don't get me wrong, I have the Nokton 25mm and it's my favorite lens without a doubt, but I use it for more controlled situations. I personally haven't used the 35-100mm but everything I've seen has been pretty solid. Maybe look for a mountable LED / ring light to compensate a bit at wedding receptions?

Keep in mind for the Nokton, f/0.95 is nice but it's quite soft and results in a razor thin focus plane. For low light, I'm typically at f/2.0 and dip into the magic aperture bag for emergencies

Senior al Qaeda man reported arrested in Algeria

LONDON (Reuters) - The number two in the militant Islamist organization Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has been arrested in northern Algeria, an Algerian news website reported on Monday.

The website of Tout Sur l'Algerie (TSA), an electronic daily, quoted security sources as saying that Salah Gasmi had been arrested on Sunday in front of a restaurant in the town of Cheurfa, about 90 miles southeast of Algiers.

It was not possible to confirm the report immediately.

AQIM is a pan-Maghreb jihadist organization that has taken responsibility for a number of attacks, particularly in Algeria. It has sent fighters to Iraq and vowed to attack Western targets, according to the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations website.

TSA said that Salah Gasmi was a communications specialist considered to be the mastermind behind a series of suicide attacks in Algeria in 2007. (Reporting by Stephen Powell; editing by Andrew Roche)

Dell Has A New Platform As A Service That Actually Makes Sense

dellDell has a new platform as a service (PaaS) and it actually makes sense. The service is called Project Fast PaaS, part of the new Dell Cloud Labs, which also includes Project Sputnik, the Linux laptop for developers and Crowbar, the?open-source cloud deployment framework. Crowbar was originally created to support its “OpenStack- and?Hadoop-powered offerings.” FastPaaS and the new Dell Cloud Labs reflects a paradox that I felt all week at Dell World. While Fast PaaS represents the innovation happening at Dell, as with any big enterprise company, it is dependent on making big deals with high margins that serve the basic demands of large enterprises. On Tuesday, I moderated a think tank?discussion that unfortunately was stacked with Dell managers. One customer attended. To my fault, a few Dell managers took control of the conversation at certain points,?which?was unfortunate. But they did express some perspectives that reflect the real conflict at Dell these days. Michael Cot?, a former RedMonk analyst who is now Dell’s director of cloud strategy and special programs summed it up well in a blog post yesterday: IT faces a real conflict. It’s a time of rapid technology advancement. Customers want access to the latest and greatest but IT still needs to keep?everything?running, too.?They are expected to make sure the email works and be innovative, too. It’s an impossible mission. In Cot?’s?words: The mind set of keeping things stable a reliable (the five nines crowd) doesn?t fit with coming up with new stuff. Practices like Agile and the rapid delivery cycles in DevOps can help, but at some point, the two paths of ensuring stability and profiting from disruption are divergent enough that you can?t perfectly co-mingle them?and yet, that?s what we expect from the IT department. Fast PaaS is a great example of how Dell is seeking to be innovative in developing a unique strategy but cloaking it as a “solution.” It tells a good story about what Dell is trying to do with its cloud strategy. Dell does not want to be like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and offer a blank virtual machine. It wants to offer solutions. And I think the strategy works. Project Fast PaaS is built on Cloud Foundry, the open-source PaaS developed initially by VMware and now operating under an Apache license. The PaaS is on-premise — it’s private. Everything comes fully packaged. A developer fills in some forms that include the

Philippines passes divisive contraceptives law

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? Philippine legislators passed a landmark law Monday to provide government funding for contraceptives and sex education in schools despite strong opposition from the Catholic church and its followers, some who threatened to ask the Supreme Court to block the legislation.

A majority of the members of the Senate and the House of Representatives separately cast their votes for the bill, which has languished in Congress for more than a decade as legislators avoided colliding with the influential church. In a scene considered unlikely just a few years ago, lawmakers openly defied the church's stand during the plenary voting, which was shown live on nationwide TV.

"The Catholic church has steadfastly opposed the RH bill for 13 years," said Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, a key proponent of the Reproductive Health bill. "But I humbly submit this afternoon that there is no force more powerful than an idea whose time has come."

President Benigno Aquino III considers the bill as a major step toward reducing maternal deaths and promoting family planning in the impoverished country, which has one of Asia's fastest-growing populations. Church leaders said in a pastoral letter Sunday that if passed, the bill would put the moral fiber of the nation at risk.

Archbishop Socrates Villegas, vice president of the Philippines' Bishops Conference, said that "the wide and free accessibility of contraceptives will result in the destruction of family life."

"Money for contraceptives can be better used for education and authentic health care," he said, adding that "those who corrupt the minds of children will invoke divine wrath on themselves."

The long delay in the bill's passage has been attributed to the fear of legislators and politicians of upsetting conservative Catholic bishops, who helped mobilize popular support for the 1986 "people power" revolt that toppled dictator Ferdinand Marcos and the 2001 overthrow of another president, Joseph Estrada.

But in a sign of changing times and attitudes, particularly across generations, reformist civil society groups and Aquino threw their weight behind the bill despite the threat of a backlash.

An independent survey in June last year found 68 percent of respondents agreed that the government should fund all means of family planning. An October survey of 600 teenagers in Manila, the capital, also carried out by the Social Weather Stations, found that 87 percent believed the government should provide reproductive health services to the poor.

The United Nations said early this year that the bill would help reduce an alarming number of pregnancy-related deaths, prevent life-threatening abortions and slow the spread of AIDS.

The U.N. Population Fund says 3.4 million pregnancies occur in the Philippines every year, half of which are unintended while a third are aborted, often in clandestine, unsafe and unsanitary procedures. It says 11 women die of pregnancy-related causes every day. Nearly 70 percent of women use no contraception at all.

Reproductive health programs are patchy and often unavailable to the poor. Some local governments have passed ordinances banning the sale of condoms and their distribution in health clinics.

"Many Filipino women have faced difficulties and sometimes death because of the absence of a comprehensive and consistent reproductive health policy. This law can change that," said Carlos Conde, Asia researcher at New York-based Human Rights Watch.

Former Manila Mayor Lito Atienza, who opposes the bill, said pro-church groups were considering asking the Supreme Court to declare the bill unconstitutional. "You cannot legislate anything that is contrary to one's faith," he told reporters.

After Monday's approval, the two chambers of Congress will need to reconcile their separate versions then send the legislation to Aquino for signing.

Now climate scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and in England report the first conclusive evidence that Arctic hurricanes, also known as polar lows, play a significant role in driving ocean water circulation and climate

AMHERST, Mass. Though it seems like an oxymoron, Arctic hurricanes happen, complete with a central "eye," extreme low barometric pressure and towering 30-foot waves that can sink small ships and coat metal platforms with thick ice, threatening oil and gas exploration. Now climate scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and in England report the first conclusive evidence that Arctic hurricanes, also known as polar lows, play a significant role in driving ocean water circulation and climate.

Results point to potentially cooler conditions in Europe and North America in the 21st century than other models predict.

Geoscientist Alan Condron at UMass Amherst and Ian Renfrew at the University of East Anglia, U.K., write in the current issue of Nature Geoscience that every year thousands of these strong cyclones or polar lows occur over Arctic regions in the North Atlantic, but none are simulated by the latest climate prediction models, which makes it difficult to reliably forecast climate change in Europe and North America over the next couple of decades.

"Before polar lows were first seen by satellites, sailors frequently returned from the Arctic seas with stories of encounters with fierce storms that seemed to appear out of nowhere," says Condron, a physical oceanographer. "Because of their small size, these storms were often missing from their weather charts, but they are still capable of producing hurricane-force winds and waves over 11 meters high (36 feet)."

He and Renfrew say that despite the fact that literally thousands of polar lows occur over the Arctic region of the North Atlantic ocean every year, none are simulated by even the most sophisticated climate models. To understand the importance of these storms on climate, Condron and Renfrew therefore turned to a new, state-of-the-art climate model to simulate the high wind speeds associated with these "missing" storms.

"By using higher resolution modeling we can more accurately simulate the high wind speeds and influence of polar lows on the ocean," Condron says. "The lower-resolution models currently used to make climate predictions very much miss the level of detail required to accurately simulate these storms."

He and Renfrew find that by removing heat from the ocean, polar lows influence the sinking of the very dense cold water in the North Atlantic that drives the large-scale ocean circulation or "conveyer belt" that is known as the thermohaline circulation. It transports heat to Europe and North America.

"By simulating polar lows, we find that the area of the ocean that becomes denser and sinks each year increases and causes the amount of heat being transported towards Europe to intensify," Condron points out.

"The fact that climate models are not simulating these storms is a real problem," he adds, "because these models will wrongly predict how much heat is being moving northward towards the poles. This will make it very difficult to reliably predict how the climate of Europe and North America will change in the near future."

Condron also notes that other research groups have found that the number of polar lows might decrease in the next 20 to 50 years. "If this is true, we could expect to see an accompanying weakening of the thermohaline circulation that might be able to offset some of the warming predicted for Europe and North America in the near future."

Man with assault rifle shot dead by police after Alabama triple murder

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (Reuters) - A man armed with an assault-style rifle and suspected of killing three men in a domestic dispute was shot dead by police after a car chase and shootout that left an officer wounded, marking a second incident of deadly gun violence in Alabama in two days, officials said on Sunday.

The two shootings on Saturday in Alabama came a day after 20 children and six adults were shot to death by a gunman who went on a rampage with a military-style rifle at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut and then killed himself.

In Alabama, a gunman identified as Romero Roberto Moya, 33, was shot multiple times by police in the town of Oxford, east of Birmingham, as he stepped from a hijacked car that struck another vehicle on Saturday, police said.

A short distance away before he was killed, Moya had exchanged gunfire with other police after crashing his initial getaway car, leaving one officer critically injured, Oxford police Lieutenant L.G. Owens said.

The pursuit was triggered by a triple slaying Moya was suspected of committing at a trailer home earlier in the morning in Cleburne County, Alabama, near the Georgia state line, Owens said.

No details about the circumstances of the killings were immediately available. Owens said the three victims may have been Moya's brothers, and a child under the age of 2 who also was injured in the incident was taken to an Atlanta hospital.

Also on Saturday, a man distraught over his wife's hospital treatment walked into St. Vincent's Birmingham with a gun at 4 a.m. local time and opened fire as he was confronted by police, wounding one officer and two hospital employees, authorities said. The gunman was killed in the shootout.

La. Tech tapping Skip Holtz as new coach

RUSTON, La. (AP) ? Louisiana Tech officials say they've hired Skip Holtz as their new football coach.

Holtz, whose hiring was announced Friday, replaces Sonny Dykes, who left to accept the head coaching job at California last week.

The 48-year-old Holtz is the son of Hall of Fame coach Lou Holtz, who is known most for his long and successful stint at Notre Dame.

The younger Holtz most recently coached at South Florida, which fired him this month following a 3-9 finish to the 2012 season. Holtz was 16-21 in three seasons at South Florida.

Holtz is 88-71 overall in 13 seasons at Connecticut, East Carolina and USF.

Review highlights evidence for beneficial effects of physical activity on brain function, especially in older generations

Their review is published online in the Springer publication, Psychonomic Bulletin and Review.

A certain amount of mental deterioration is expected with advancing age. However, this may not necessarily have to be the case as particular aspects of cognitive function such as task switching, selective attention and working memory among others, all appear to benefit from aerobic exercise. Studies in older adults reviewed by the authors consistently found that fitter individuals scored better in mental tests than their unfit peers. In addition, intervention studies found scores in mental tests improved in participants who were assigned to an aerobic exercise regimen compared to those assigned to stretch and tone classes.

Interestingly, these results were not replicated in children or young adults. The one area where physical fitness or regular exercise was found to have an effect on cognitive function in these age groups was for memory tasks. Both the updating of working memory and the volume of information which could be held was better in fitter individuals or those put on an aerobic exercise regime. The authors comment that despite physical fitness not affecting all areas of cognitive function in younger people, evidence is mounting that just because they are in their prime developmentally does not mean that they cannot benefit from regular exercise.

In older generations, the evidence for improvement in cognitive function is insurmountable. The types of tests of cognitive function reviewed here are important in showing that exercise may attenuate age-related decline for specific tasks. For example, it has been found to positively affect mental tasks relating to activities such as driving, an activity where age is often seen as a limiting factor.

The authors conclude that engagement in exercise can provide a simple means for people to optimize their cognitive function. They add that more research into the effects of exercise on young adults and children is required. However, they say that "the indications reported thus far - that regular exercise can benefit brains even when they are in their prime developmentally - warrant more rigorous investigation, particularly in the context of society becoming increasingly sedentary."

Verizon announces Samsung Galaxy Camera with LTE, available online December 13th for $550

Samsung Galaxy Camera announced for Verizon, will be available online December 13th

Not that this will come as much of a surprise to anyone at this point, but Samsung and Verizon have finally announced their intent to sell an LTE-compatible version of the Galaxy Camera on Big Red's network starting this Thursday for $549.99. Interestingly, there was no mention of when or if the TouchWiz-running camera will show up in stores, but you can at least pick one up in either white or cobalt black through the carrier's website. If you choose to grab one and take advantage of the faster data, Verizon's offering a promotion in which you only have to tack on an extra $5 per month to your Share Everything plan. Not a bad deal, considering a tablet will run you twice that -- provided you can stomach the upfront cost.
