UN says 22,000 displaced in Myanmar unrest

SITTWE, Myanmar (AP) ? Victims of Myanmar's latest explosion of Muslim-Buddhist violence fled Sunday to already packed displacement camps along the country's western coast as a top U.N. official said the unrest has forced more than 22,000 people from their homes.

Boats carrying some of those fleeing arrived outside the state capital, Sittwe. They trudged to the nearby Thechaung camp, a place already home to thousands of Rohingya Muslims who took refuge there after a previous wave of violence in June.

"I fled my hometown Pauktaw on Friday because there is no security at all," said 42-year-old fisherman Maung Myint, who arrived on a boat carrying 40 other people, including his wife and six children. "My house was burned to ashes and I have no money left."

Another Muslim refugee said she fled her village, Kyaukphyu, on Thursday after attackers set her home on fire.

"We don't feel safe," said 40-year old Zainabi, a fish-seller who left with her two sons, aged 12 and 14. "I wish the violence would stop so we can live peacefully.

Human Rights Watch released dramatic satellite imagery of Kyaukphyu on Saturday showing a vast swath of the village in ashes. The destruction included more than 800 buildings and floating barges.

Myanmar's government has put the death toll at 67 over the last week, saying 95 more people were injured and 2,818 houses were burned down from Sunday through Thursday in seven townships in Rakhine state.

The casualty figures have not been broken down by ethnic group, but Human Rights Watch said the Rohingya had suffered the brunt of the violence. The New York-based rights group also said the true death toll may be higher, based on witness accounts and the government's history of minimizing news that might reflect badly on it.

Ashok Nigam, the U.N. Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Myanmar, said the figure of 22,587 displaced included both Muslims and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists, but he gave no breakdown.

The latest unrest pushes the total displaced to nearly 100,000 since clashes broke out in June.

Speaking to The Associated Press while visiting Thechaung camp, Nigam said getting aid to the new wave of displaced will be a challenge as some fled on boat and others have sought refuge on isolated hilltops.

"The situation is certainly very grave and we are working with the government to provide urgent aid to these people," he said.

Ill will between Muslims and Buddhists in Rakhine state goes back decades and has its roots in a dispute over the Muslim Rohingya's origins. Although many Rohingya have lived in Myanmar for generations, they are seen as foreign intruders who came from Bangladesh to steal scarce land.

Today, the Rohingya also face official discrimination, a policy encouraged by Myanmar's previous military regimes to enlist popular support among other groups. A 1984 law formally excluded them as one of the country's 135 ethnicities, meaning most are denied basic civil rights and deprived of citizenship.

Neighboring Bangladesh, which also does not recognize the Rohingya as citizens, says thousands of Rohingya refugees have also sought to flee there by boat. Its policy, however, is to refuse them entry.

Rights groups say Myanmar's failure to address the root causes of the crisis means the situation may only get worse.

In June, ethnic violence in Rakhine killed at least 90 people and destroyed more than 3,000 homes. About 75,000 people, mostly Rohingya, have been living in refugee camps since then. Curfews have been in place in some areas since the earlier violence and were extended this past week.

Rakhine state spokesman Win Myaing said Saturday the government was providing assistance to people who lost their homes and had distributed aid provided by Turkey. He said the United Nations and private agencies were traveling to affected areas to provide aid.

Italian premier says Iran sanctions are effective

(AP) ? Italy's premier says stepped up European sanctions against Iran are proving effective.

Speaking Thursday alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Mario Monti said the sanctions were "inflicting the pain" on Iran. He said they were being rigorously applied and enforced.

Last week the European Union expanded its sanctions against Iran to include financial, trade, energy and transport sectors. It imposed asset freezes and trade restrictions on additional companies, notably those in the oil and gas industry.

The West suspects that Iran is developing a nuclear weapon. Israel has repeatedly hinted it might strike the Islamic Republic's uranium enrichment facilities. The West hopes sanctions will force Iran to back down before that would be necessary.

Monti said the Israeli approach was "slightly different" but complimentary to Europe's.

U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi talks during a joint press conference with the Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby, unseen, following their meeting at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012. The U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria says the Syrian government and some rebel leaders have agreed to a ceasefire during the upcoming Muslim four-day holiday. (AP Photo/Nasser Nasser)

(AP) ? The U.N. Security Council gave unanimous backing Wednesday to a four-day truce proposed by the international mediator for Syria to mark a major Muslim holiday after he warned that the failure of yet another cease-fire plan would only worsen the fighting.

Yet even this modest effort ? the international community's only plan for scaling back the violence ? appears doomed.

Previous cease-fire missions have failed, in part because neither Syrian President Bashar Assad nor rebels trying to topple him had an incentive to end their bloody war of attrition. Both sides believe they can still make gains on the battlefield even as they are locked in a stalemate, and neither has faith in negotiations on a political transition.

Lakhdar Brahimi, the U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria, has proposed that both sides lay down their arms during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which begins Friday.

The Security Council is normally divided on Syria, but Assad allies Russia and China joined other council members in endorsing the idea of a temporary truce that is meant to pave the way for talks on ending Syria's 19-month-old conflict.

The response on the ground ranged from lukewarm to downright rejection. Syrian government officials said they were still studying the idea, while Syria's political opposition said it was skeptical of the regime's promises. A rebel commander dismissed the plan as irrelevant and a radical Islamist group fighting alongside the rebels said it won't comply with any truce.

As Brahimi briefed the Security Council, the death toll since the start of the conflict in March 2011 crossed the threshold of 35,000, activists said, and more violence was reported across the country.

Two car bombs killed at least eight bus passengers in the capital Damascus and 12 regime soldiers near a military checkpoint in the north, while regime airstrikes on villages near a besieged army base killed 12 civilians, activists said. They also posted a video showing at least 13 bodies laid out Wednesday in a room in a Damascus suburb, some of them women and children. Each side blamed the other for the deaths.

Brahimi told the Security Council by video conference from Cairo that he hopes a truce will allow humanitarian aid to reach war-stricken areas and start transition talks, said U.N. diplomats who spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting was private.

However, months of horrific bloodshed and deep distrust between the combatants make it unlikely they will embark on the path outlined by Brahimi. The Syrian opposition says it won't negotiate unless Assad resigns, something the Syrian leader refuses to do.

"The Syrian regime throughout its reign and up until now signs everything but violates everything," Haitham Maleh, a veteran Syrian opposition leader, said after he and others met with Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby in Cairo.

Maleh said there is concern the regime would exploit a cease-fire to take back rebel-held territory. The opposition will not accept any political solution that does not include Assad leaving his post, he said.

Brahimi has served as envoy since September, taking over from former U.N. chief Kofi Annan, who quit after failing to end the Syria fighting. Annan had pushed a six-point plan, including an April 12 cease-fire that was to lead to transition talks but never took hold.

Annan's successor has been blunt about the difficulty of his assignment, trying to lower expectations. He suggested Wednesday that even the holiday truce is a gamble, saying that failure could make the situation in Syria even worse, according to the U.N. diplomat.

Still, the international community has little else to offer. There is no appetite for military intervention, while harsher U.N. action against the regime has been blocked by Russia and China, two Security Council members with veto powers.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said she supports Brahimi's cease-fire so that "Syrians could celebrate in peace."

"We'd like to see the violence come to an end, there's no doubt about this, and we'd like to see a political transition take hold and begin. We've been calling for that for more than a year," she added.

Few of those involved in the conflict appeared ready to commit to a truce.

Abdelbaset Sieda, head of the main opposition group in exile, the Syrian National Council, said rebel fighters would hold their fire during the holiday unless attacked by regime forces. However, his group has no control over rebels fighting on the ground.

Rebel commander Zahran Aloush of the al-Islam brigade outside of Damascus said he's ignoring truce efforts. "How can I expect a cease-fire from a regime that has never given us anything, ever," he said via Skype.

The al-Qaida-linked group Jabhat al-Nusra, which fights with the rebels and has claimed a number of large suicide bombings against regime targets, said it will not lay down arms.

"There will be no truce between us and the prideful regime and shedder of the blood of Muslims," the group said in statement posted on militant websites. "We are not among those who allow the wily to trick us, nor are we ones who will accept to play these filthy games."

In Damascus, Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdessi said the truce proposal was still "being studied" by Syrian army leaders and that Syria's decision would be announced Thursday.

Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters after the Security Council meeting that his country had received indications from Syria it would abide by a cease-fire.

Brahimi hasn't said how compliance would be monitored. Annan's truce plan was more comprehensive, calling for an open-ended truce, a pullback of troops and heavy weapons from urban centers and supervision by U.N. monitors.

In Wednesday's violence, 20 people were found dead in a building in the Damascus suburb of Douma, said local activist Mohammed Saeed, speaking via Skype. The dead included 10 women and four children, he said.

An amateur video posted online showed bodies scattered on the landings of a stairwell and sprawled out on tile floors. Among the bodies were those of two young boys, one with a hole in his head, and a woman. A thick stream of blood flowed from a doorway. Another video showed 13 bodies wrapped in blankets and laid out in two rows.

The videos matched activist descriptions of the event, but because Syria imposes tight restrictions on foreign journalists, their authenticity could not be independently verified.

The state-run news agency SANA quoted the Foreign Ministry as saying that 25 people were killed in Douma on Wednesday and that they were victims of a massacre carried out by "armed terrorists," the regime's term for opposition fighters.

Also Wednesday, Russia's chief military officer said Syrian rebels have acquired portable air defense missiles, including U.S.-made Stinger missiles. In remarks carried by Russian news agencies, Gen. Nikolai Makarov didn't say how many such missiles the rebels had and who supplied them.

A Syrian rebel told The Associated Press in Turkey that the insurgents obtained dozens of shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles, but would not say who provided them.

The Syrian opposition has urged its foreign backers to send heavy weapons, saying rebel fighters cannot break the stalemate as long as Assad can bomb them from the air. However, the Obama administration has refused to do so, saying the weapons might fall into the wrong hands and eventually be used against the U.S. and its allies.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland denied that the U.S. has provided any Stingers to Syrian rebels. She challenged Russia to provide evidence suggesting otherwise.

Farrell introduced as new Red Sox manager

By HOWARD ULMAN

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:52 p.m. ET Oct. 23, 2012

BOSTON (AP) - Larry Lucchino cracked open a fortune cookie from the Chinese dinner that Red Sox officials and John Farrell shared during their final discussion about Boston's managerial job.

The message inside drew a chuckle from the team's president.

"One that I opened after everyone left was quite interesting," Lucchino said Tuesday. "It said, `you will solve a major problem that's very important to you."'

From that meeting at Lucchino's home Saturday night, also attended by owner John Henry and general manager Ben Cherington, the Red Sox are moving forward from their worst season since 1965 with a contributor to their World Series championship of 2007.

Two days after announcing the hiring of Farrell, their pitching coach from 2007-10, the Red Sox introduced him at a news conference. He succeeds Bobby Valentine, who was fired after one year and a 69-93 record.

Farrell, who managed the Toronto Blue Jays the past two seasons, called Boston "the epicenter" of baseball.

He's familiar with some players and members of the front office from his experience with the team. He expects that to smoothe his transition. But, he said, he won't take for granted his relationships with players.

"I will work my butt off to earn their trust, to earn their respect and create an environment in that clubhouse that is just that," Farrell said. "It's a trusting one. It'll be a learning one and, yes, it'll be a competitive one and, hopefully, a very successful one."

That wasn't the case last season when Valentine had a cool relationship with some coaches, publicly criticized Kevin Youkilis before he was traded to the Chicago White Sox and was the target of players' complaints at a meeting they had with team officials.

The Red Sox also were hurt by numerous injuries and management finally gave up its postseason hopes when it traded Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 25. That left Valentine with starting lineups in September that looked better suited to their Triple-A team at Pawtucket.

"I can't speak to what the Red Sox clubhouse was last year," Farrell said. "I think it's important that we communicate consistently to the players, we outline expectations and we have to hold players accountable to what we're trying to get done.

"It's got to be a positive place that they want to come to every single day."

Farrell, 50, received a three-year contract to become the 46th manager in Red Sox history.

"I truly believe in an aggressive style of play," he said. "That creates a strategy that is relentless, and I think that is critical."

The Red Sox wanted Farrell last year when they let Terry Francona go. But the Blue Jays wouldn't release him after they went 81-81 in the first year of his three-year contract. But after going 73-89 this season, finishing one spot above the last-place Red Sox in the AL East, they allowed Farrell to leave in exchange for Red Sox shortstop Mike Aviles. Boston also received reliever David Carpenter.

Cherington reportedly had wanted Dale Sveum to succeed Francona. But Lucchino preferred Valentine and Sveum became manager of the Chicago Cubs.

"It's important that I have a relationship with the manager that's strong to the point that you can disagree and be candid with one another and walk away knowing that that relationship is still intact," Cherington said. "I feel confident about that with John, based on my existing relationship with him."

Farrell had a key role in the development of starters Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz. Both are coming off subpar seasons, but Farrell said those two, plus Felix Doubront and John Lackey, who was sidelined all this year following Tommy John elbow surgery, can form a solid core of the rotation.

"We all recognize how important pitching is and, particularly, starting pitching," Farrell said. "You look at every team that's advanced to the postseason ... and it typically starts and ends with the strength of your starting rotation. So that is a priority."

The Red Sox need another reliable starter and an everyday outfielder. They can use an upgrade at first base and must settle on a replacement for Aviles.

David Ortiz and Cody Ross, two of Boston's top hitters, are eligible for free agency but have said they'd like to return. Ortiz was working out at Fenway Park on Tuesday and Cherington said he's talked several times with the designated hitter's agent.

"When you look at the roster, there are still some very good major league players here," Farrell said. "We do need to get healthy."

Farrell drew criticism from Toronto fans for leaving, especially after he talked about his loyalty to the Blue Jays last month.

"That means there's passion, there's caring from the fan base," he said, "but I would take exception with the thought that there was no intent to fulfill a contract."

Toronto general manager Alex Anthopolous has said Farrell told him that "there's no other city that was more of a perfect fit or a perfect opportunity."

He takes over a Red Sox team that ended its last two seasons in disarray.

The Red Sox lost their last eight games under Valentine. In 2011, they went 7-20 in September, leading to Francona's exit. Afterward, there were reports that players ate chicken and drank beer in the clubhouse during games.

On Saturday night, it was Hunan shrimp and wonton soup at Lucchino's house.

"We were sitting around eating some Chinese takeout," Farrell said. "I said this is a place that I would love to take on the challenge. It's an incredible city.

"It's an incredible baseball environment."

GreenWave Reality ships WiFi light bulbs that flick on through motion and smartphones

GreenWave Reality ships WiFi light bulbs that flick on through motion and smartphones, join the 21st centuryWe've seen connected light bulbs before, some more sophisticated than others, but they're rarely as straightforward as GreenWave Reality's just-shipping Connected Lighting Solution. Eco-friendly LED bulbs in the lineup include their own WiFi and are immediately controllable from a smartphone or tablet as soon as they're receiving power. Basics controls like group presets and timed lighting are just the start; if you're not worried about leaving anyone in the dark, the bulbs can respond to motion sensors and only illuminate the rooms that need attention. And while the intelligence isn't new in itself, GreenWave would argue that sheer accessibility gives it an edge, with electric utilities in Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden skipping the retail middleman by selling directly. Don't despair if you live in the US: the linked-up lighting is cleared for eventual use by Americans who'd like to save both energy and a trip to the light switch.

Drewan Baird. Oudtshoorn. 22 October 2012. 09h35. Readers need to be aware of the fact that I am a party intimately involved in the story that follows. Some identities are withheld as action against them may follow.
_________________________

If South Africa is to avoid what currently appears to be an inevitable outcome ? a failed state, education will have to win the day.

No alternative route to eventual, eluding success but education is available. NO OTHER ROUTE; NO OTHER. Period.

On September 5 I wrote the principal to complain about the fact that the ballots of the Student Representative Council election had been compromised and argued that the election should be declared null and void and a new election be held.

The ballot is the most inviolable document in a democracy; trumping even the constitution.

I met with the principal and his deputy and I was assured that the integrity of the teaching staff at Oudtshoorn High was above reproach.

I am myself a product of Oudtshoorn High. My eldest daughter is preparing for a bright professional future on the back of 5 glorious years at the school. My youngest is following suit at the dawn of her matric year. If I did not trust to the integrity of the staff at Oudtshoorn High I would never have exposed my children to them!

Therefore the assurance of integrity never entered into the equation of a rather elementary issue, easily defined; easily corrected.

Should, an here?s a rather vivid thought, Helen Zille and Jacob Zuma attend the ballot counting in an election on the Cape Flats, say, it would be incomprehensible that Zille may suggest to Zuma that, given the hour and the demanding day, they each take a ballot box home to count the votes and return at dawn with the result.

Yet, a teacher, of unimpeachable integrity, did just that when he loaded ballots in his car, in clear view, and returned next morning with a result in the SRC election.

Unacceptable.

Completely and utterly unacceptable.

I do not question the outcome of the SRC election.

I do not question the integrity of the teacher who took the ballots home.

I do object, in the strongest possible terms, to the violation of a basic democratic right of each and every learner at Oudtshoorn High.

I am under no obligation whatsoever to even attempt to justify my outrage. The fact screams for itself: The ballots were compromised. Period.

The ballots were compromised. The election was compromised. Period.

An alarming string of events followed on my formal complaint.

Firstly, the school did nothing to address the problem and it was even suggested in the local press, that the school regarded the matter closed after my complaint was initially discussed.

This lethargy represented an even bigger problem than the original appal.

A clear violation occurred. The infringement was reported. The matter was discussed? then nothing!?

I proceeded to report the matter to the Eden & Central Karoo Education District Authority where two Oudtshoorn senior managers were eventually made aware of the complaint after an undue delay in George.

The local executives acted immediately and decisively. The matter was investigated, and on 10 October the circuit manager wrote the principal:

?Die bewering is dat die betrokke klasse se stembriewe by ?n opvoeder se huis getel was en dus van die skoolperseel verwyder was. Hierdie bewering is reeds deur u in ons gesprek op Maandag 8 Oktober 2012 bevestig. U word dus vriendelik versoek om die volle verkiesingproses te herhaal (vanaf Graad 8 tot by Graad 11).?

The principal reacted with expected probity: he called for new nominations the very next morning. He decided that a new election had to be effected.

It is very important, at this juncture, to realise that the circuit management clearly was on top of its game with a keen knowledge and exact understanding of the rules: They did not instruct the principal to hold a new election, they requested (?vriendelik versoek?) that he held a new election. The importance of this wording will be evident shortly.

Soon after the second nomination process was completed, some reports say within the hour, the governing body intervened with the eventual result, on Monday at 10h33, of the Western Cape minister of education enjoining that the ?instruction? of the local circuit management be rescinded and that no new election be held.

It is important to note that the principal obviously did not refer to his governing body, because he did not need to do so in his capacity as electoral official. He called for new nominations and the governing body only intervened thereafter.

As I am not known for abandoning matters I once take up I wrote the premier, Helen Zille, on Tuesday:

I filed a complaint on September 5 that the ballots of the SRC elections were compromised. The details are either known or ascertainable beyond reasonable doubt and therefore I may be succinct.

I have learned yesterday that Donald Grant vacated the instruction of the Eden & Central Karoo Education District that the election be voided and rescheduled. Such insouciance with democracy! And on the very eve of a critical by-election in his constituency!

This abominable decision trumps even the original perfidy.

The ballot is the ne plus ultra of democracy, inviolable beyond even a constitution.

To compromise ballots is a gross violation of the most elementary democratic right.

To expect high school learners to accept such sacrilege is to treat them with contempt and to impress upon their developing minds the noisome notion that corruptibility is acceptable; that compromising principle is condoned.

To defend the irreverence is unconscionable.

To ignore an instruction by the local education authority to right the wrong is flagitious.

To overturn a decision by the very people installed to safeguard educational standards is outrageous.

The learners of Oudtshoorn High School deserve better than teachers; a principal; a governing body; a district authority; and a minister who prefer obfuscation to transparency.

Despicable.

There is never reason sufficient not to do the right thing and I expect you, Helen, to do the right thing. Because that?s what you are known to do, once you have all the data.

The premier?s most efficient administrative secretary, Myrtle Jonathan (I suggested to her, to howls of laughter down the line, that she runs against her boss for the party leadership) managed my letter admirably. Zille was conducting a cabinet meeting and wanted to peruse her education ministry?s response before Jonathan sent it to me at 16h01.

It was a blinder. I emphasise the relevant portions:

Thank you for your correspondence dated 16 October 2012 regarding the SRC election held at Oudtshoorn High School.

The content of your correspondence has been duly noted and carefully considered.

Please note the following with regard to your query: Measures were published in the Provincial Gazette in 2008 to regulate the nomination and election of a school governing body and the nomination and election of a representative council of learners at a public school in the Western Cape.

In terms of these measures, certain procedures applicable to the nomination and election of educator members to school governing bodies apply to the nomination and election of a representative council of learners. However, the dispute resolution measures applicable to the nomination and election of educator members to school governing bodies do not apply to disputes concerning the nomination and election of a representative council of learners.

The electoral officer for the nomination and election of a representative council of learners is the school principal. Should any dispute arise with regard to the nomination and election of a representative council of learners, the principal as the electoral officer is required to consider and make a final decision on the matter. The measures do not provide for an appeal process in the context of the nomination and election of a representative council of learners.

In the light of the above, neither the Provincial Minister of Education nor the Western Cape Education Department has the legal competency to intervene in matters concerning the nomination and election of a representative council of learners. These matters are the exclusive remit of the principal. On this basis, the WCED arranged for the withdrawal of an instruction wrongly issued by the district office concerned.

The decision of the electoral officer in the context of the nomination and election of a representative council of learners may be reviewed by the courts.

I remind readers of my earlier mention of the relevance of the expression ?vriendelik versoek?, used by local circuit management, in reading my final letter to the principal:

My brief van 16 Oktober verwys.

Nothing was done by the principal to rectify this flawed process.

This unfortunate tale has still an even more unfortunate tail? if a bigger abuse is indeed possible.

On Thursday I received a call from my youngest daughter in obvious distress.

I rushed to the school to discover a despicable d?nouement.

A teacher, in a class not taken by my daughter, was reported by friends of my daughter?s to have discussed, with her class, my role in compromising the reputation of Oudtshoorn High with my complaint.

No harm done, I say my say the way I say my say and am quite prepared to take fliegerabwehrkanonen fire ? flak, for lesser logodaedali. Even if the flak is absurd, such as that I was organising a march against the school?s handling of the election. My, what a thought! However, when I have a problem I speak my mind; I do not dance my mind!

But that my child was compromised because her dad stood up against a clear and present violation of the basic democratic rights of her peers and her ? an abuse identified by the circuit management; an abuse acknowledged by the principal; an abuse ignored by the governing body? Not acceptable!

I challenged the teacher in the presence of the principal within 20 minutes of fetching my shaken child home.

The teacher assured me that she never said a word about my child; never even mentioned her name, or the name of any other learner for that matter, and? and?

I am old and wise enough not to trust to school yard banter and accepted, again, the integrity of teachers at Oudtshoorn High.

And in any event, so I argued, I consulted my daughter before I filed my complaint way back on September 5, and I warned her of the inevitable recoil, and she was happy to let me make my point, there?s my daughter ? and her sister!

But then the real facts of what transpired in that teacher?s classroom came to light.

My daughter has had a relationship with a coloured learner, and student leader no less, at Oudtshoorn High for some time. He is like an own child in the home my wife and I make. We have taken fliegerabwehrkanonen fire for this relationship beyond our most outrageous expectations, but we accept that people will have their own views of things.

Yet guess what?

The teacher referred to this ?interracial? relationship in a questionable manner. This from a teacher in a high school in the Western Cape of South Africa! In 2012. Almost the last quarter of 2012.

She said that visitors to Oudtshoorn High, sometime last year, considering to enrol their children, happened to see my daughter and her boyfriend together and decided there and then that Oudtshoorn High was not for their children. They decided, so the teacher said, to enrol their children at Langenhoven Gymnasium.

I am not even going to address the loathsome covert insult in the face of Gimmies!

But I am going to address this teacher?s clear unsuitability to teach; to influence young minds, to be sure!

I write this nauseating report after four failed attempts to discuss the matter with the teacher.

I called her on Thursday afternoon after comments from learners past and present started to stream in, and told her that I discovered that she lied to me about what transpired in her class. I asked that we meet the next day. She indicated that she had to assist with grade 12 matters, but that she would call to set up a meeting. And she said, when I confronted her with what I have learned about the incident, that she stood by whatever she said, or words to that effect.

I sms?d her three times on Friday, and she drove past me as I waited to fetch my daughter from school ? forced to return my all smiles and waving greeting as she waited for traffic coming from where I was parked.

She has not responded.

I will charge her on Monday with conduct unbecoming and I will insist that she be prosecuted to the fullest extend of however the education department does these things.

Not only did the teacher attack my daughter?s choices and lifestyle; she also dragged my ?religious convictions?, such as she may have the questionable ability to attempt to understand my views, having never spoken to me about it, into the matter when my eldest daughter, from university, admonished her for her behaviour on social media.

Her statements clearly indicate religious bias, to exacerbate her quite apparent racial bias.

And here, my longsuffering readers, are some of the comments from learners past and present, in response to my child?s agony?

By the way, I, apparently, was the man she so deftly put right, mind!

I am discombobulated by the inference that damage to the school?s reputation could have been caused by indicating wrongdoing? and, apparently, not by the wrongdoing itself. Astonishing!

- The ballots were compromised. Period.
- The election should have been nullified and rescheduled. Period.
- Oudtshoorn High chose to treat its learners with contempt and to impress upon their developing minds the noisome notion that corruptibility is acceptable; that compromising principle is condoned. Period.

Ye gods and faeries! We?re trapped in Pink Floyd?s The Wall!

If we in South Africa are ever to dig ourselves out of failure, we?d better get education sorted out!

Education is not coaching teenagers through matric; education is installing skepticism and logic and reason.

Education is not teaching the 3 R?s and a bit of Shakespeare and Van Wyk Louw; education is installing critical thinking.

Education is not teaching that authority should be blindly accepted; education is installing respect for human rights and democratic principle, come what may.

With reference to Hillary Clinton?s 2008 outburst against Barack Obama, I say: ?Shame on you Oudtshoorn High? Shame ? on ? YOU!?

The learners of Oudtshoorn High deserve better; deserve the best.
