The Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology recently published a study from researchers at the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Public Health that shows cannabinoids can decrease up to 90 percent of skin cancer in a timeframe of only 20 weeks.
Researchers used a natural marijuana derivative known as synthetic cannabinoids which are characteristically more active. The examination was conducted on lab mice riddled with skin cancer over a 20 week period in which researchers discovered that cannabinoids played an instrumental role in reducing the mice?s skin cancer by up to 90 percent.
Furthermore, the study in question revealed that the synthetic cannabinoids were responsible for ?inhibiting tumor promotion.?
The study?s researchers came to the conclusion that this is the first report ?indicating the structure?activity relationships for the anti-inflammatory activity of synthetic cannabinoids on TPA-induced inflammation in mice. Naphthoylindoles, JWH-018, -122 and -210, had the most potent anti-inflammatory activity and also markedly inhibited tumor promotion by TPA in the two-stage mouse skin carcinogenesis model. The present results suggest that synthetic cannabinoids, such as JWH-018, -122 and -210, may be used as cancer chemo preventive agents in the future.?
This is astounding news! Now, if we could only commission a study that examines the multitude of beneficial uses for hash oil a.k.a. Rick Simpson?s Oil-Phoenix Tears to validate all of the anecdotal evidence that is already in existence.

TIP! You can take a big bite out of the cost of a kitchen remodeling project by opting to give your existing cabinets a new finish, instead of buying all-new cabinetry. You can use some paint on the base and add new finishing knobs to really update the look.
No matter what you?re attempting to do in life, knowing how to do it is a great point from which to start. This is certainly true of home improvement. You surely do not want to improve your home in such a way to your roof leaks or your basement stairs are hazardous. The following tips will give you the knowledge you need to get started in home improvement.
TIP! Store material that you?re using for building between floor joists or ceiling rafters. It is fairly easy to store a lengthy piece of molding or even a two by four in this fashion.
Having the right tools is essential when you are doing renovations. If you have the right equipment you will ensure you do a good job and it is simple to do. Knowing how to use those tools is just as important as having the right tools.
TIP! The addition of a bathroom to the home can increase the value of your home. Having additional bathrooms is terrific, particularly if it is on a different floor from the existing ones.
It?s very easy to dress pillows for a teenager?s room. Use old clothes that aren?t being worn anymore, including band shirts, old jeans, and cool shirts, and cut and sew the pieces together so that they can fit onto the pillows. This will enhance their room with a bit more flavor and personality.
TIP! Ask a reputable professional to help you inspect the condition of your existing floors before you decide to lay down all new hardwood. Sometimes you may have beautiful, natural hardwood hiding underneath layers of carpet or linoleum that is just waiting to be refinished.
Use baby food jars for organizing your office. You can screw or superglue the jar lids under the wall shelf. Small things like nails and screws, beads or jewelry making supplies can be stored in these jars. Once you do this, twist these jars into place underneath your shelf. This saves you a ton of counter space.
TIP! Do not demolish too much when you start your home improvement task. You have to be able to see what you are tearing down before you remove something.
Be cautious when choosing a drain cleaner for your most stubborn clogs. Cleaners can differ a great deal, and many of them are quite harsh. Crystallized cleaners can stick to the pipes and corrode them. If you have a septic tank, you have to pick a drain cleaner approved for that use.
TIP! If you want to free up the space on your tables and nightstands, try buying a floor lamp to replace your table lamps. The floor lamps can be moved to different areas of the room because they are free standing.
There are lots of various dangers to be wary of when taking on a home improvement project. Don?t buy drywall (also known as wall board or sheet rock) that was made in China. In 2005, there was a drastic increase in the amount of drywall imported from China by US builders. The biggest problem with it is that the quality control standards are virtually nonexistent, so the weak product simply fails to hold up. There have been extreme situations in which the drywall has released harmful gases that have a drastic, negative impact on wiring in walls.
TIP! Take a good look at your porch when considering improvements. Anyone who drives up to your home is going to see the porch first.
Start thinking about, and planning for, your home improvement project early in the game. There are a million different things you can do to your living space if you just look in the right places. Removing the rush to find just the right color scheme will reduce the stress of your renovation.
TIP! When painting your home, whether just a wall or your entire home, first you have to know how much paint is needed. Make an accurate estimate based on measurements; if you guess, you may spend too much on paint.
Don?t forget to put sealant over your grout after laying new tile work. Grout is not waterproof on its own, but porous instead. Without sealing grout, moisture can creep in, creating mildew and mold. If left unsealed, you will notice your grout discolors quickly from stains. Not only is sealed grout easier to clean and more attractive, it may save you a lot of money by preventing expensive-to-repair mildew issues.
TIP! ?Age-in-place? home improvements should be a major priority when it comes to home improvement. This concept helps you to cope within the home as you are going to get older as time passes.
In most cases, home improvements are easy enough for almost anyone to take care of. However, it is still important to proceed with caution and research any repair you plan before you begin. This article should have helped you understand that a little know-how goes a long way. Best of luck to you with your home improvement projects!
BERLIN (AP) ? When Cati Holland checked her email a few weeks ago, she was surprised to find a message saying she was eligible for compensation for her grandmother's Berlin store that was seized by the Nazis more than 70 years ago.
It wasn't spam or a phishing attempt or even a legitimate note from a German official working to track down victims and their heirs. Rather, it was from an Israel-based social media genealogy company that is using the Internet to help match property stolen by the Nazis to heirs of the victims.
"My grandmother told me so many stories about the store ? about the beautiful dresses and fancy hats they made, the wealthy customers who wore them," Holland, 75, told The Associated Press by phone from Hadera, Israel.
"But we always thought everything had been lost after my parents fled the Nazis. It never even occurred to us to claim any kind of restitution. I was completely surprised about that email."
Since the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945, Germany has paid around 70 billion euros ($92 billion) in compensation to the victims of the Holocaust. More than two million people have received lump sum payments or an ongoing monthly pension. The state of Israel has received around 1.7 billion euros ($2.2 billion), according to the German finance ministry.
Part of the compensation was earmarked for the Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany, a private New York-based organization that works to secure restitution for survivors and their heirs. Descendants can come forward to claim their family's assets until the end of 2014 if they find their original property on a recently released list by the Claims Conference, called the Late Applicants Fund.
Over the years, the search for the heirs has become more complicated because most of the Holocaust survivors have died. Descendants also don't always have detailed knowledge of their family's former assets.
But the rise of social media has offered new opportunities to track heirs and close the books on one of the darkest chapters of German history.
"We are only just seeing the huge impact that social media will have on Holocaust history," said Robert-Jan Smits, the director-general of the European Union's commission for research and design. "We are moving from dusty archives to digitized databases."
One of the driving forces behind the new push has been Gilad Japhet, CEO and founder of Israel-based MyHeritage, a social media website with about 70 million registered users worldwide that lets individuals build their own family trees online.
A few months back, Japhet read a report about the Claims Conference's list of over 40,000 buildings, stores and factories that could not be matched with their original owners. Japhet matched some names on the list to the millions of names that users had posted on MyHeritage's family trees online.
"I thought my chances of finding any of the names on the website of MyHeritage were not looking good since experts have been searching for them for decades. But I still wanted to give it a chance," Japhet said. "I chose some very rare names from the list and to my surprise the second name I put in was already a match."
Japhet put together a team of five employees and had them write a computer program that automatically matches the names on the Claims Conference's list with those on the virtual family trees. So far, they have been able to match about 150 names on the list with names on the family trees. They expect to continue working on this project for several more months.
In the case of Cati Holland, MyHeritage initially contacted her son-in-law Eran Karoly. He had posted a family tree which included Recha Cohn, Holland's grandmother and the owner of the Berlin store, which was located on the fashionable Kurfuerstendamm boulevard in the western part of the city. Holland's grandparents escaped to South America shortly after the Nazis took over in the early 1930s and ended up in Israel many years later.
Holland filed an application for restitution to the Claims Conference and is now waiting for a response. The level of compensation depends on various factors, such as the value of the property and how many people will apply until 2014.
"I filled out the forms and sent in birth certificates and several photos," Holland said.
The Claims Conference itself says it has "received hundreds of applications" for the Late Applicants Fund but can't say for sure how many of them were due to MyHeritage.
Applicants who qualify for restitution will have to wait until the program's deadline on December 31, 2014, the Claims Conference's chairman Reuven Merhav wrote in an email.
As for Japhet and his team, they have made clear to the claimants that they don't want any money in return for their efforts.
"In my emails to the users, I always write that we don't want any money for doing this, nor part of any restitution they will get," said Japhet. "We do this as a mitzvah ? which in Judaism is a good deed."

According to market research firm IDC, global mobile phone shipments grew 6% on-year in Q2 2013 to an astounding 432.1 million units. As impressive as that figure is though, it represents only a marginal improvement over the first quarter?s 428.8 million units. The free trial version never expires but is ad-supported. However, you can opt to buy the full version if you do not want to see the ads. The app is currently US-only. Depending upon the success and popularity of the app, other marketplaces could be considered.
Underwater propulsion from a 3-D printerPublic release date: 22-Jul-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ]
Contact: Andreas Fischer Andreas.Fischer@ipa.fraunhofer.de 49-711-970-1280 Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft
Octopods, which are also known as octopuses or squid, are considered to be the most intelligent invertebrates. In fact, they have been referred to as the "sages of the sea". They are capable of learning; they can open tin cans, and can even tell patterns apart. They are also clever when it comes to protecting themselves from their enemies. While they generally move along the ocean floor with their eight arms, they flee by swimming head-first, in line with the principles of propulsion. When the mollusk does this, water is taken into its mantle, which is then closed by contracting sphincter muscles. The water is then squirted back out at a high pressure through a funnel. The resulting propulsion pushes the octopus forward in the opposite direction. By changing the position of the funnel, the octopus can precisely steer its direction of travel. For researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA, this intelligent propulsion principle served as a role model for the development of an underwater propulsion system. "Squids use this type of movement mainly if they are trying to flee suddenly and quickly. The system is simple, but effective. When they use it, the octopods can speed up considerably over short distances," says Andreas Fischer, an engineer at IPA in Stuttgart. "We have integrated this propulsion principle into our underwater actuators: four elastomer balls with mechanical inner workings create propulsion by pumping water."
Water is sucked into each actuator or elastomer ball through an opening ; a recirculation valve prevents reflux. A hydraulic piston contracts the integrated cable structure like a muscle. In this way, it pushes the water out of the 20 x 6 cm ball. In turn, a motor pump moves the hydraulic piston. "Our underwater actuator is well-suited for maneuvering small boats. It can also be used as a floating aid for water sport devices such as jet skis, surf boards, or scooters that pull divers into deep water. In contrast to ship propellers, it is quiet, and fish cannot get caught in it," the researcher says in explaining the benefits of the system, which has just successfully past initial laboratory tests.
Industrial robots shorten production processes
The best part: the experts can produce the system in a single step with a 3D printer. In order to produce its complex geometry amorphously with soft plastic, the researchers opted for the fused deposition modeling generative production process, or FDM for short. With this approach, the plastics to be processed are heated and liquefied in an extrusion head , and are transformed into a thin filament in the pressure nozzle. This filament is then applied in layers, from bottom to top, to produce a complex 3D component. Fischer and his team used thermoplastics such as polyurethane because of their flexibility. The final product of this process is an underwater propulsion system that can stand extreme levels of pressure without breaking. Even in situations of very high stress, it always returns to its original shape.
Thanks to FDM, the researchers can also scale the actuators. In fact, components of up to two meters in size can be printed three-dimensionally. This can be done with the help of an industrial robot that has been equipped with three extrusion heads. "At the moment, the maximum construction volume of FDM facilities is 91.4 x 61 x 91.4 cm, whereby no more than ten different thermoplastics can be processed in layers. With robot-based FDM, much larger components can be produced, with different combinations of material. By integrating continuous filament into thermoplastics, for example, we can manufacture carbon fiber-reinforced components quickly and at a low cost," says the scientist in explaining the advantages of the melting process. Moreover, the production process can be made much shorter by using several robots that work on a single component simultaneously.
