Cynthia McFadden Lectures Clinton on Running for President: Don't You Have an 'Obligation?

As if comparing Hillary Clinton to?Thomas Jefferson?wasn't hyperbolic enough, ABC's Cynthia McFadden on Wednesday practically begged the Secretary of State to run for president. The?Nightline?co-anchor lobbied Clinton, lecturing her about the "obligation" she has to "break through that glass ceiling." Yet, the reporter could only manage the most gentle probing into the issue of the terrorist attack in Libya.

McFadden pressed the Democrat to run in 2016, asking the question no less than four times. If it appeared, the journalist wondered, "that you might be the person who could actually break through that glass ceiling and become the first female president of this country, would you feel a certain obligation to seize that mantel?" [MP3 audio?here.] Any answer other than yes seemed not good enough.

She pushed, "But there's never been a woman who really had a credible chance. And it looks as if you might just be that person. And I know how seriously you take commitment and obligation."

The journalist pleaded, "...Are we up to maybe?"

Finally, after quizzing Clinton about her health, McFadden got to the issue of dead Americans in Libya. She charitably described the Secretary of State's evasive testimony before Congress this way: "In her testimony, Clinton pulled no punches."

McFadden's first question wasn't really a query at all. Citing Clinton's line about "what difference does it make" over how the attack occurred, the anchor sympathized, "It seemed as though you lost your temper at the hearing."

She then asked the Secretary if she "regretted" that statement and whether, "you stand by what you said?"

What kind of a question is that? Would Clinton say no? How about pressing her on the details of the attack?"

ABC donated 15 minutes over three programs (Nightline,?World News?and?Good Morning America)?to Clinton. At least McFadden could offer some truly hard questions. She opened the segment by pretending it would be this way, declaring that "No topic was off-limits, from the most contentious global issues to the most intensely personal ones."

CYNTHIA MCFADDEN: She has met with world leaders 1,700 times in the past four years, but as of Friday, Hillary Clinton will no longer be secretary of state. Today, Massachusetts Senator John Kerry was confirmed as her successor.?I've interviewed Secretary Clinton nearly a dozen times and I've never seen her so relaxed or upbeat. We sat down for her last television interview in office. No topic was off-limits, from the most contentious global issues to the most intensely personal ones.She's been Secretary of State for four years. Visited 112 countries. More than any of her predecessors. Logged almost a million miles.?But it's where she's going next that has everybody talking. Let's just say this isn't the first time the question has come up.?In Moscow three years ago, you told me, "I have absolutely no interest in running for president, none." You're never going to run for president again?"

HILLARY CLINTON [file footage] : I have absolutely no interest in running for president again. None, none.

MCFADDEN: Two years ago you said the exact same thing in Australia. [File footage.] You said talk about the future. You said you're not running for president in 2012 or 2016 or 2020. [Cut to present day.] And yet in the past few days, a PAC called Ready for Hillary has been launched. Can you still say with a straight face that there's no way you would consider running for president?

CLINTON: Sitting here now, that is certainly what I believe, and I am, you know, still the Secretary of State, so I'm not in politics. I'm going to be focusing on my philanthropy, my charities, my writing and speaking. So I am looking forward to having something resembling a normal life again.

MCFADDEN:?And yet, are we up to maybe?

CLINTON [Laughs]: That's very good, Cynthia. Well, of course, of course, I am flattered and honored. I didn't even know about some of these things that are happening now. I don't know how else to say it, but I am going to get back into my life again. This is going to be new for me. I don't know how I'm going to react to it, to be honest.

MCFADDEN: When you conceded defeat in the primary, you made a famous speech in which you said that there were 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling.

CLINTON: Although we weren't able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you, it's got about 18 million cracks in it.

MCFADDEN:?If in the course of the next couple years it appears, as it does appear right now, that you might be the person who could actually break through that glass ceiling and become the first female president of this country, would you feel a certain obligation to seize that mantel?

CLINTON: I do want to see that glass ceiling shattered. I don't think it has to be any particular person.

MCFADDEN:?But there's never been a woman who really had a credible chance. And it looks as if you might just be that person. And I know how seriously you take commitment and obligation.

CLINTON: Right. But I'm not making any commitments or obligations because I do take them seriously.

MCFADDEN:?What else goes with the territory? Something Clinton is certainly familiar with? harsh criticism and tough questions. She was called before Congress last week and grilled over what she has called the low point in her tenure, the security lapse in Benghazi, Libya, that led to the death of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. In the first days, the controversy reached a boiling point over this.

RICE: There was a violent protest. Violent protest outside our embassy.

MCFADDEN: U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice's explanation that the murders were the result of an anti-Muslim video. That turned out to be false.?It was a pre-planned terrorist attack. In her testimony, Clinton pulled no punches.

CLINTON: We didn't know that. With all due respect, the fact is we had four dead Americans. Was it because they had protests, or because guys out for a walk and they decided to kill some Americans. What difference at this point does it make? It is our job to figure out what happened and do everything question to prevent it from ever happening again, senator.

MCFADDEN: And today, she doubled down.?It seemed as though you lost your temper at the hearing.

CLINTON: When someone tries to put it into a partisan lens, when they focus not on the fact that we had such a terrible event happening with four dead Americans, but instead, what did somebody say on a sunday morning talk show? That to me is not in keeping with the seriousness of the issue and the obligation we all have as public servants.

MCFADDEN: But do you regret "what difference at this point does it make?"

CLINTON: No, because I think that asking questions about talking points for a Sunday morning talk show, is really missing the point.?I believe in transparency. I said let the chips fall where they may. Put it all out there. And I don't want that to be politicized.

MCFADDEN: So you stand by what you said?

CLINTON: Absolutely.

Fog delays 3rd round at Torrey Pines

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Tiger Woods is going to have to wait to pursue another win at Torrey Pines.

A thick fog shrouded the course along the Pacific bluffs on Saturday and essentially wiped out the entire day at the Farmers Insurance Open. Woods, a six-time winner of this tournament, had a two-shot lead and never even bothered coming to the golf course. Three players completed one hole ? and that was after a three-hour delay.

Players were to resume the third round Sunday morning and go as long as daylight allowed, and then finish Monday.

And that's a best-case scenario.

In a bizarre twist, tour officials were hopeful of rain and a little wind Sunday morning, two elements that most golfers dread. That's what is needed, however, to keep the fog away from Torrey Pines and allow the tournament to resume.

"When Mother Nature doesn't want you to play, you can't play," said Mark Russell, the tour vice president of competition.

They did just about everything else.

Lucas Glover warmed up three times, at one point passed the time with a little trickery. He lined up two balls in the direction of the range, and hit them with a wedge so that one ball went straight in the air, and Jerry Kelly took a baseball swing with an inverted club and made contact.

Through four tournaments this year, the PGA Tour already had had its share of weather problems. This will be the second tournament that doesn't finish on the scheduled day. The Tournament of Champions at Kapalua didn't even start until Monday, the day it was supposed to end, because of 40 mph gusts. It had to be reduced to 54 holes and was completed on Tuesday.

Woods was at 11-under 133 and didn't need to come to the course with all the delays because he was in the last group with Billy Horschel and Casey Wittenberg. Horschel spent part of his day getting advice through text messages on how to play with Woods.

He'll get to see plenty of Woods over the next two days.

Russell said there would not be a 54-hole cut for 87 players ? typically there is a cut when the field is more than 78 players on Saturday. Instead, they will take a short lunch break and go back out, racing time when fog allows. The groups will stay the same until the tournament is over.

"I think the coolest thing that can come from it is that I think it looks like we're going to be paired together for 36 holes," Horschel said. "So it's a pretty cool thing that's going to happen. It's just going to be a fun day tomorrow and Monday. So we'll see how it goes."

Horschel also is among 17 players who are entered in the qualifier Monday to get into the Phoenix Open, which starts next week. Russell said those players have been given the latest tee times for the qualifier ? the latest is 1:36 p.m. MST ? with hopes of getting there.

Saturday began with a 30-minute delay that soon stretched into three hours, and the sun broke through the clouds as Hunter Mahan, Robert Garrigus and John Mallinger teed off on the 10th hole at the South Course. Five minutes later, the horn sounded. Because it was for weather, they were able to finish the hole.

Mahan's caddie took a picture of the 11th tee, a 216-yard par 3, and the visibility was no more than 50 yards.

It never got any better.

"That little bit of sun we did get today was overpowered by just the saturation of the atmosphere, so we just couldn't overcome it today," said Stewart Williams, the tour's meteorologist.

Defending champion Brandt Snedeker, seven shots out of the lead, was among those who had the longest day. He was up at 5 a.m., arrived in darkness, warmed up in the fog and never hit a shot.

"It's tough when you prepare one day, and then it's one of those days where preparation is going to be kind of thrown off," he said. "But we have these days from time to time. We kind of know what to do to keep your mind fresh and ready to go. You realize it's a different week, and could be a Monday finish now and be ready for that."

Woods won in 2005 at Torrey Pines when fog interrupted the tournament, though it was completed on Sunday. The last time this event was shortened to 54 holes because of weather was in 1998.

Russell said the Farmers Insurance Open will go 72 holes. He just couldn't promise when 84 players could get to the 37th hole of the tournament. Without rain, there was the chance of more fog Sunday morning.

"If we say we're not going to play because we might have fog in the morning, and we didn't have fog, we'd have tremendous problems," he said. "So we're going to schedule it, and hopefully, we won't have fog and we can play golf. That's all we can do. If Mother Nature doesn't cooperate, we don't have very much control over that. We're going to be out here, ready to play, and see what happens."

That's assuming they can see at all.

Report: Japan to air ultra-high-def TV in 2014

TOKYO???The Japanese government is set to launch the world's first 4K TV broadcast in July 2014, roughly two years ahead of schedule, to help stir demand for ultra high-definition televisions, the Asahi newspaper reported on Sunday without citing sources.

The service will begin from communications satellites, followed by satellite broadcasting and ground digital broadcasting, the report said.

The 4K TVs, which boast four times the resolution of current high-definition TVs, are now on sale by Japanese makers including Sony, Panasonic and Sharp. Other manufacturers include South Korea's LG Electronics.

Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications had aimed to kick-start the 4K TV service in 2016. That has been brought forward to July 2014, when the final match of the 2014 football World Cup is set to take place in Brazil, the Asahi report said.

In Japan, the development of super high-definition 8K TVs is in progress, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications plans to launch the test 8K TV broadcast in 2016, two years ahead of schedule, it said.

Illinois Driver's Licenses For Undocumented Immigrants Law To Be Signed Sunday

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- As Illinois becomes the fourth and most populous state to issue driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants, there are still nagging concerns that the measure doesn't have enough safeguards to avoid the identity fraud and other pitfalls faced by the three other states with similar laws.

Backers of the proposal, who tout it as a public-safety measure, argue that required facial recognition technology is reliable enough to prevent fraud, but opponents point to hundreds of fraudulent cases in New Mexico, Washington and Utah after those states began giving undocumented immigrants permission to drive. Illinois will not require applicants to be fingerprinted, for fear that would discourage immigrants from applying.

"How many people would apply for this document knowing that fingerprints will be going to (federal authorities)? Probably not all that many," said Fred Tsao, policy director of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, a driving-force behind the measure.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is expected to sign the measure that grants driving privileges to undocumented immigrants Sunday. Proponents say it will allow an estimated 250,000 individuals unlawfully residing in the state to apply for a three-year temporary driver's license and require them to get training and insurance.

The licenses will be like those already issued to certain foreign-born, legal visitors. Under the new law, applicants will be photographed at a driver services facility, and their photo will be entered into the state's facial recognition database - like the rest of Illinois' licensed drivers - to verify their identity.

But the other states' driving programs for undocumented immigrants have been abused. New Mexico and Washington both issue licenses, while Utah issues a permit.

An Associated Press investigation last year found a striking pattern in New Mexico, suggesting immigrants tried to game the system to obtain a license. In one instance, 48 foreign-born individuals claimed to live at a smoke shop in Albuquerque to fulfill a state residency condition. New Mexico does not have a fingerprinting requirement, though it asks applicants to show two proofs of state residency.

Authorities also busted a fraud ring last year that forged documents for undocumented immigrants to use after driving from as far as Illinois and North Carolina to obtain a New Mexico license. Gov. Susana Martinez has vowed for years to repeal the decade-old measure, but the legislature has repeatedly rejected such efforts.

Washington's requirements attracted national attention when Jose Antonio Vargas, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and then-Washington license-holder, revealed his undocumented immigration status in an essay for the New York Times Magazine in 2011. Vargas chronicled how he obtained his license. State authorities conducted an investigation that revealed Vargas did not reside at the address he stated in his application, and canceled his license a month after his essay was published.

Utah issues three different driving privilege cards: one for U.S. citizens and permanent residents, another for legal visitors and a third for undocumented immigrants. Utah's permit for undocumented immigrants is not valid for identification. Illinois' law will follow suit.

Utah's Republican-controlled legislature amended the state's law in 2011 to require undocumented immigrants to be fingerprinted, and mandates that the state notify U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement if an applicant's fingerprint check yields a felony on record. If the individual applying has a misdemeanor warrant outstanding, the state must notify the agency that is seeking the person's arrest.

That kind of information-sharing between state and immigration authorities worries Illinois' immigrant-rights advocates, like Tsao, who pushed for the legislation without a fingerprinting requirement. They say fingerprinting could deter potential licensees from applying for fear of being identified and deported.

Local law enforcement officials argue in favor of fingerprinting.

"We could see if they have committed a crime; it could be a crime in another state or it could be a crime in their home country," said John Kennedy, executive director of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police.

The Illinois secretary of state's office has vehemently defended its facial recognition database as highly sophisticated and accurate. The program uses an algorithm to match more than a dozen facial features that are not easy to alter, such as eye sockets and sides of the mouth.

"The integrity of our driver's license system is a priority," said Henry Haupt, a spokesman for the office.

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Edward Acevedo, a Chicago Democrat, said state roads will be safer because undocumented immigrants will receive training and be tested before obtaining a license. They also will be required to purchase insurance, an aspect that would save millions for currently insured drivers, Acevedo said.

Tsao's organization estimates uninsured undocumented immigrant drivers cause $64 million in damage claims each year, an expense currently covered by increased premiums.
