Shabazz Napier Says He'll Miss Coach Calhoun

EAST HARTFORD?

? Shabazz Napier developed a strong relationship with Jim Calhoun during his first two years at UConn, so his mentor's decision to retire shook the junior.

"When I heard the news, I kind of broke down," Napier said Saturday. "I wanted Coach to stay another year, but that's just me being biased. But I still go to his office every single day. I feel like our bond is still so strong. I'll still depend on him."

Napier and his UConn teammates were at Rentschler Field Saturday, signing autographs outside the stadium before the Buffalo-UConn football game. The Huskies were also introduced on the field in the first quarter.

New coach Kevin Ollie wasn't at Rentschler ? he was watching is son play for the Glastonbury High football team ? but the players accommodated a line of fans for about 90 minutes before the game. And Napier, who is recovering from foot surgery, talked about the coaching change.

The transition, he said, has been smooth.

"It's been actually easy," Napier said. "Coach Ollie, we all feel like he's a great coach and he's going to be a great coach. He's been tough on us, just like Coach Calhoun. That's why we felt like he was one of the best candidates to be the head coach. It's been hard because he strives for perfection."

Napier has worked closely with Ollie, a former guard. So answering to Ollie as the head coach isn't unusual.

"He's a friend," Napier said. "You can call on him anytime. He's a great guy to talk to. He's always been that person I turned to besides [Calhoun]. Seeing that he came in when I was a freshman, we just created a bond since then. There's been a lot of times I've been sitting in his office and talking with him. We've already created that bond."

Napier said he hoped Calhoun would return and he'll miss hearing the bellowing voice at practice. But Calhoun will still be around the program and Napier will continue to talk to him.

"It will be weird, but we've got Coach Ollie and Coach [Glen] Miller and Coach [George] Blaney ... they've all learned from Coach Calhoun," Napier said. "They understand how to strive for perfection."

As for Ollie's job status, Napier endorsed him as the coach for this year and beyond. Napier compares Ollie's one-year contract as head coach to the one-year deals he had as an NBA player.

"He's used to circumstances like this," Napier said. "I think that's what makes him a better man and it's why he's so mentally strong. Coach says to understand that you have to be mentally strong no matter what the circumstances are. You can't change the circumstances. He'll be great because he has such a passion."

Hyppolite Breaks One

Running back Lyle McCombs gained 97 yards on 29 carries, continuing his heavy workload. McCombs had 93 carries in the first four games and has been UConn's primary running threat.

But backup Martin Hyppolite made a bid for more touches after running 50 yards for a touchdown Saturday. Hyppolite, from Wakefield, Mass., is 214 pounds and provides a different look than the 166-pound McCombs.

"He's a bigger guy and there's some situations and some plays where we think that maybe bringing a guy in there who's a little bit bigger, you know, packs a little bit more lead in his pencil, so to speak ... we're trying to use Martin a little bit," coach Paul Paqualoni said.

Defensive Holes

UConn had just one sack (Trevardo Williams) and the lack of pressure could be attributed to injuries on the defensive line.

Jesse Joseph and Teddy Jennings are out. "We lost a lot of experience out there," Pasqualoni said. "It certainly is a factor. We're rotating different people in and out, based on down distance situations. ... Williams has 22.5 career sacks, second in school history. His 34.5 tackles for loss is ninth on the all-time list. ... Linebacker Jory Johnson had a career-high 14 tackles, including two for a loss. ... UConn is 16-4 against Buffalo and 19-4 against MAC opponents. ... Chandler Whitmer's 36-yard pass to Ryan Griffin was his longest completion of the season. ... As part of the Connecticut Day celebration, the NCAA Division III champion Trinity women's lacrosse team was honored between the first and second quarter. UConn also honored the New Haven-based Walter Camp Football Foundation during the second quarter while participants in the "Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities" took part in the pregame coin toss and were honored at halftime. There was also a local Boy Scout troop parading through Rentschler at halftime. ... Former UConn linebacker Scott Lutrus, a Brookfield native, was at the game. Lutrus, a member of the Indianapolis Colts, is on injured reserve with a torn ACL. ... Attendance was announced at 34,666, but the 40,000-seat stadium seemed about three-quarters full. The best home attendance this season was 35,270 for the opener against UMass. N.C. State drew 34,202.

Apple CEO apologizes for Maps flaws, recommends rivals

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc Chief Executive Tim Cook apologized Friday to customers frustrated with glaring errors in its new Maps service and, in an unusual move for the consumer giant, directed them to rival services such as Google Inc's Maps instead.

The rare apology follows Apple's launch of its own mapping service earlier this month, when it began selling the iPhone 5 and rolled out iOS 6, the highly anticipated update to its mobile software platform.

Users complained that the new Maps service - based on Dutch navigation equipment and digital map maker TomTom NV's data - contained geographical errors and gaps in information, and that it lacked features that made Google Maps so popular from public transit directions to traffic data and street-view pictures.

"We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better," Cook said in a letter to customers released on its website, adding that the company "fell short" of its commitment to deliver "the best experience possible to our customers."

Unusually, he suggested that customers download rival mapping services available in Apple's App Store while the company improves the product.

"While we're improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app," he said in the letter.

Apple is typically loathe to tout rival services and the contrite apology by Cook is an indication of how Apple is changing under the chief executive who took over last year from co-founder Steve Jobs just before his death. It also took the additional step of prominently displaying the rival services on its Apps Store.

"It is a bit unusual but at the same time, Tim is keeping Apple's commitment to provide the best user experience for customers," Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu said. "A key reason for Apple's success is keeping customers happy so we think this is a good move."

"People forget that Google Maps started out inferior to Mapquest and Yahoo Maps," he added.

Apple's home-grown Maps feature -- stitched together by acquiring mapping companies and data from many providers including Waze, Intermap, DigitalGlobe and Urban Mapping -- was introduced with much fanfare in June by software chief Scott Forstall. It was billed as one of the key highlights of the updated iOS6 software.

But errors and omissions in the maps service quickly emerged after the software was rolled out, ranging from misplaced buildings and mislabelled cities to duplicated geographical features.

NEW APPLE

The last time Apple faced such widespread criticism was in 2010, when users complained of signal reception issues on the then-new iPhone 4 model.

A defiant Jobs at the time rejected any suggestion the iPhone 4's design was flawed, but offered consumers free phone cases at a rare, 90-minute press conference called to address those complaints.

While Apple fixed the issue, Jobs had apologized to users only after he was specifically asked if he was sorry. He also said the issue was shared by all the major manufacturers, naming rivals Research in Motion, Samsung Electronics and HTC Corp.

Cook himself played a key role in convincing Jobs to tackle the negative publicity that arose around that issue, something he was initially reluctant to do, according to his biographer.

"Finally Tim Cook was able to shake him out of his lethargy," Walter Isaacson said in his biography on the late Silicon Valley icon. "He quoted someone as saying that Apple was becoming the new Microsoft, complacent and arrogant. The next day Jobs changed his attitude."

It remains to be seen how fast Apple can fix the mapping glitches. Jobs had been in a similar position when he allowed email synchronization software MobileMe to launch in 2008, to deadly reviews. The mercurial CEO took the group to task for it and replaced the group's head. The service is now folded into the iCloud product.

Mapping is a complex process that takes a lot of resources and years to perfect, said Marcus Thielking, co-founder of Skobbler, maker of the popular GPS Navigation 2 app, built using the crowdsourced OpenStreetMap platform.

"It helps a lot if you have great data to start with," he said, adding that it appears that different database were thrown together in building Apple Maps. "They (Apple) can offer incremental updates and that's what they will do."

Cook said that more than 100 million iOS devices are using the new Apple Maps and that the more people use Maps, the better it will get. He also offered some hints on why the company decided to remove Google Maps.

Apple launched the Google-powered Maps "initially with the first version of iOS" and created a home-grown version of the service as it wanted to provide more features, Cook said.

"As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps," he said in the letter.

Google provides turn-by-turn navigation on Android-based devices but the popular feature was not available for Apple devices. Apple Maps replaced Google Maps in iOS 6 and the Google service is now only available through a browser.

Shares of Apple fell 2 percent to close at $667.10 on Nasdaq.

Rare albino whale spotted off coast of Australia (VIDEO)

Migaloo is seen swimming with another whale. (White Whale Research Centre)A rare albino humpback whale has been spotted off the coast of Australia.

And unlike the terrifying creature in "Moby Dick," this white whale has been drawing the enthusiastic attention of maritime tourists. CNN reports that the whale, nicknamed "Migaloo" by researchers, is the only known all-white humpback adult in the world today.

Whale watchers have even set up a website to track Migaloo's annual migration.

In July, researchers spotted a nearly all-white humpback that they say may be related to Migaloo.

Peter Harrison, director of marine ecology research at Southern Cross University in Australia, says researchers have been tracking Migaloo since 1991 and believe he is now in his 20s.

"Everyone here is quite excited," Oskar Peterson, who runs a whale tracking website, told CNN. "We see him almost every year now, but it's still front page news when he turns up."

Google's Eric Schmidt slams patent wars, still has nice things to say about Apple and Samsung

Eric Schmidt's recent trip to Seoul wasn't all spontaneous Gangnam dancing. Google's former-CEO / current executive chair had a lot to say during the Korean launch of the company's Nexus 7 tablet, bemoaning the patent wars that have ensnarled the industry, telling the crowd, "literally patent wars prevent choice, prevent innovation and I think that is very bad. We are obviously working through that and trying to make sure we stay on the right side of these issues." The war for marketshare ought to be fought with the release of better products, rather legal maneuvering, according to the executive.

But in spite of Apple's role in the battle -- and the company's decision to go it alone on products like its troubled Maps app -- Schmidt still had kind words for Cupertino, calling the company "a very good partner," and adding that the, "two companies are literally talking all the time about everything." The exec also told the crowd that he'd be meeting with Samsung, one of the company's "most important partners," during the trip, "as I do every time I come here."

How To Run A Successful Article Marketing Business | Backlinkarticles

All of your articles should be accessible on your website. In fact, your content should be front and center as it lends you more credibility and builds your image of expertise in your field. Dedicating a page of your website to listing and linking to your content is a great way to ensure continued access and interest in it.

Article marketing is only successful if the content is fresh. You cannot let your content get stale on a website. It needs to be updated and added to constantly. Old content might attract new traffic to your site but it will lose repeat traffic. Attention spans are small these days and only new information will keep your audience engaged.

Write material that will stand the test of time. Don?t write about things that will only hold true for right now. You want readers to be able to be engaged even if they look at material that you have written over a year ago. If they can read old material and still be satisfied, there is a higher chance that they will want to keep reading your new material.

To keep your article marketing efforts fresh, vary the formats of your articles frequently. Do not get complacent and stuff new content into the same formula over and over. Use tip lists, how-to?s, anecdotes and other archetypes to add variety to your articles. Not only will varied article formats retain your readers? interest, but also you will find them more interesting to produce this way.

If your article marketing campaign involves formats that allow reader feedback, (e.g. blogging) you should encourage their participation by ending each article with a question. This spurs readers to consider your article more carefully. Those readers that respond will become involved in a communal discussion, tying them closer to your online presence and making them more likely to read your work again.

Read more often to improve your writing skills. Reading increases comprehension levels, allowing you to make your writing flow more smoothly. If you keep reading new materials, you will increase your writing skills. It does not matter what you are actually reading, as long as you just keep reading anything you can.

Even the most tenured article marketers have room for improvement. Nobody is perfect in this business. Always remember that you need to tweak even your best-performing campaigns. Find what your readers are enjoying about your marketing efforts and work to improve it. Things can go from good to great in no time.

Enrich your article with other links. Your article may hold a wealth of information, but if you find related topics that your target audience may enjoy, link to them! Readers love when they can trust a writer to help them find more information on a topic, even if it wasn?t written by the author themselves.

Make your article introductions lively. Try to interject some fun, wittiness or sparkle into the beginning of your article. This will draw in readers much better than something that starts off dry and boring, such as ?this article is going to talk about?? Look for interesting trivia or fun facts about your topic and add them into your intro.

Know your fee rates. Companies who work with affiliates charge different rates, sometimes even depending on the type of marketing you plan to do for them. Check out these fees, and make sure to pay attention to any fees that may be hidden ?start-up? fees in the contract. Don?t pay for something if you don?t know know what it is.

If you are ready to promote your business through articles online, you could really gain a great influence over the web. However, you want to make sure that you know what you have to do to get attention through your articles, and even how they should be written and just about what. With these tips, however, you should begin to understand the concept much better.

    How Many Gays in Hampstead?

Here is a craft question for you, GetReligion readers. No I don?t mean freemasonry but journalism. When should a reporter use his editorial voice to correct or challenge an assertion made by the subject of his story? What if the assertion is not central to the story at hand? What if the assertion is in line with convention wisdom, but is not true?

This item in a suburban newspaper serving the Hampstead and Highgate area of the London borough of Camden, Ham & High, tees up this question nicely. Under the headline of ?Hampstead church first in London to allow same-sex civil partnership ceremonies?, Ham & High reports that Rossyln Hill Chapel, a Unitarian congregation, has voted to permit its American minister, the Rev. Patrick O?Neill, to solemnize same-sex civil partnerships. The lede states:

A Hampstead church could become the first in London to hold civil partnership ceremonies in its chapel following an unprecedented vote.

The article recounts the congregations internal deliberations on offering same-sex blessings for civil partnerships and Dr. O?Neill?s application to the Camden Council for a license to perform the ceremonies. The congregation voted unamimously in support of the innovation, and Dr. O?Neill explained the decision was motivated in part by the church?s belief that it should be a prophetic voice to the community on this issue.

Our motivation for this is always to be pressing for greater equality for all people which is very much consistent with our basic values as a church,? he explained. ?The issue for us now is setting an example for the wider community.

The article also offers background on the issue of same-sex blessings under English law and notes the coalition government has allowed religious institutions to solemnize same-sex civil partnerships. It also gives Dr. O?Neill space to discuss his views on same-sex blessings and lets him distinguish his denomination?s stance from the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church, which do not permit its clergy to solemnize civil partnerships.

The article is nicely constructed with strong quotes, good context and an explanation of motivation. Who, what, when, where, why are all here.

There is also this quote from Dr. O?Neill:

He added: ?We need to raise cultural awareness and recognise that in our society ten to 15 per cent of people are gay, lesbian or bisexual?. He said: ?It affects many families, whether they recognise it or not.?

Is this true? I have no reason to suppose that Dr. O?Neill has been quoted incorrectly. What I mean by my question is ?10 to 15 per cent? of the population gay/lesbian? This is a hotly debated point and has been since the Kinsey studies were published in the late 40?s which first posited the 10 to 15 per cent figure. However in 2010 the Office for National Statistics in the U.K. reported that 1.5 per cent of the British population is gay.

In its account of the ONS study, the Guardian wrote:

How many people are gay in Britain? It?s a question which has vexed government and the tabloid press alike for some time. Estimates vary from around 5% to 7% (from a Treasury assessment before the civil partnership act in 2004) through to a much lower 2.2% from the latest British crime survey.

Well, today, the Office for National Statistics has published the most comprehensive breakdown on the question yet. It survey 238,206 people across Britain ? dwarfing even the mighty British crime survey, which ?only? asks 22,995 people. In fact, the sample is slightly smaller, once you discount don?t knows, refusals and non-responses ? but still a large 247,623.

It?s part of the ONS? Integrated Household Survey, which comes out once a year to a normally muted response, largely because it?s buried on the terrible ONS website. The questioning involved showing people a card of options and asking them to indicate which category they fitted into. As a result, the ONS is highly confident about the results. Extrapolated nationally, they suggest a population of 726,000 gay, lesbian or bisexual people in the UK.

This also raises the question of what does it mean to be gay? Is it purely self-identification, or does inclination and past experience determine what it means to be gay/lesbian?

In its 2006 study on human sexuality, the Australian Longitudinal Study of Health and Relationships reported that .66 per cent of women and 1.03 per cent of men self-identified as gay/lesbian. This study, in conjunction with the ONS report and other studies would seem to dismiss the claims of Dr. O?Neill.

Yet if you go deeper into the Australian study and look at Table 3 you will see the question of sexual identity is rather more nuanced.

Table 3: Sexual Identity, Attraction and Experience of Respondents

    Sex

    FemaleMaleTotal
    Sexual identityHeterosexual98.0897.728,027
    Homosexual0.661.0369
    Bisexual1.261.23102

    Same sex0.10.3719
    Neither sex2.742.5215
    Total4,1174,0798,196

    ?

While the rate of self-identification as gay/lesbian in the population hovers at around 1 per cent, the rates for sexual attraction to the same sex and sexual experience are much higher.

The journalism question I have is: should the author have responded to Dr. O?Neill?s claim of 10 to 15 per cent? In defense of the reporter, the issue of the proportion of gays and lesbians in the population is not the central subject of the story. And, chasing down every claim and statement made by a subject in a story can distract from the central issue ? which here was that a Hampstead church will be the first in London to offer gay blessings.

Yet the veracity of the proportion of gays in society claim touches upon the motivation for the congregation of Rosslyn Hill Chapel. Should an assertion that something is true be challenged when there is evidence that it is not true? Or, would it suffice to say the question is disputed?

What say you GetReligion readers? Should you believe everything you read in the newspapers or expect the newspapers to make sure everything presented to you is true?

Family Tree DNA moves to shorthand SNP nomenclature | Cork ...

Family Tree DNA posted the following message on the y-haplotree webpages of customers:

Long time customers of Family Tree DNA have seen the YCC-tree of Homo Sapiens evolve over the past several years as new SNPs have been discovered. Sometimes these new SNPs cause a substantial change in the ?longhand? explanation of your terminal Haplogroup. Because of this confusion, we introduced a shorthand version a few years ago that lists the branch of the tree and your terminal SNP, i.e. J-L147, in lieu of J1c3d. Therefore, in the very near term, Family Tree DNA will discontinue showing the current ?longhand? on the tree and we will focus all of our discussions around your terminal defining SNP.

This changes no science ? it just provides an easier and less confusing way for us all to communicate.

    Bennett Greenspan, Family Tree DNA
Dr. Michael Hammer, University of Arizona

Instead of long names for positions on the y-haplotree, the use of terminal SNPs will be a lot easier for us all to deal with!

Walmart to stop selling Amazon's Kindle line of readers and tablets

Walmart to stop selling Amazon's Kindle line of readers and tabletsIt's a lonely world when you've no storefronts to call your own. Shortly after Target decided it best to halt the sales of Amazon's Kindle products, it's being reported that Walmart is following suit. A quote obtained by Reuters suggests that Wally World's bigwigs won't be carrying Amazon tablets and e-readers "beyond the existing inventory and purchase commitments." And yes, that includes "all Kindle models current and recently announced." No actual reasoning was given beyond the conventional company line, but one has to wonder if Walmart isn't somehow considering getting into some of the businesses that it was previously helping Amazon push.

It's also taken a plunge with Vudu, as it's offering an in-store disc-to-digital UltraViolet conversion as well. You might say that Walmart would never, ever start hawking its own e-readers, but crazier things have happened -- Best Buy has an entire brand devoted to in-house goods, and Amazon itself has expanded from an online storefront for laundry detergent and bestselling novels to a bona fide hardware mainstay.

Credit Cards And Personal Finance: Tips For Finding Balance ...

Consumers need to be informed about how to take care of their financial future and understand the positives and negatives of having credit. Credit cards are often quite helpful, but they can be dangerous in that using them incorrectly can lead to debt. Continue reading for great advice on how to properly use credit cards.

By keeping track of all your credit card purchases, this will help you from spending more money than you can actually afford. It is simple to lose track of spending unless you are keeping a ledger.

Be sure to go over the laws on credit cards that have been passed recently. For example, companies cannot give retroactive rate hikes. Also, double cycle billing is prohibited. Read up on credit card laws. The two major legislative changes recently are called the CARD Act and the Fair Credit Billing Act.

If you aren?t satisfied with you current interest rates, ask your creditor to lower them. If they will not change it even after you talk to the retention team, start searching for a card with a lower interest rate. After you find one, change to the credit card that will service your needs better.

You may want to close any credit card accounts that you are no longer using. By closing an old account, you remove any chance that it could be used by a criminal. You can even close accounts that carry a balance. You simply pay the balance off after you close the account.

Get in contact with your card company to see if they are willing to decrease your interest rates. There are plenty of creditors who will lower interest rates if the consumer has established a good history of on time payments. It can end up saving you quite a bit and is not going to cost you anything to ask.

Do not make credit card purchases on public computers. Your credit information may be stored in these computers. Public computers are often found in coffee shops and public libraries. When you leave your details behind on such computers you expose yourself to great unnecessary risks. Restrict your purchases to your own personal computer.

Understand your financial situation prior to applying for a credit card. Get a copy of your histories, as well as your credit reports, so you?re able to know what you?re able to do financially. If you see anything that is wrong file a dispute. Also, check over any negative information and try your best to correct it.

If a credit card carries an annual fee, it is prudent to avoid these cards. In today?s market, it is quite easy to find a card without an annual fee. Annual fees can really add up and in the long run, you will pay too much to make the card worth your while.

If you want a card but don?t have credit, you might need a co-signer. This can be a family member or friend with existing credit. They have to be willing to state they will pay what you owe if you are unable to pay it. This is one method that is effective in helping individuals to obtain their first card so that they can start building credit.

As a parent, it?s up to you to ensure that your children are financially responsible enough to handle a credit card before they receive one. You may find it tough to deny them because you do not feel they are ready, but exercising restraint now will set them up for a greater sense of responsibility down the road.

There are a lot of financial pitfalls waiting out there for the unwary consumer; punitively high interest charged on credit card debt is certainly one of them! This article has covered how to use your credit card responsible, so you now have the tools needed to be a responsible consumer.

Their services entail some fees for their effort, but it's worth it since you won't have to waste your time walking around the city on foot just to find a good offer on travel accommodations.
    3. Go For Bundled Rates
There are certain vacation packages you can avail that offers discounted prices on bulk airline reservations. You can ask your friends or family members if they want to go on a vacation with you and do a headcount to determine the exact number to book for the travel plan. Check out different rates or give airline companies a call to determine if the offer is perfect for you and your group's budget.
Keep in mind that it is essential for an individual to know all the details regarding their travel plans before finalizing any decisions. If you want to get the best airfare deals for your vacation or business trip, then take some time off from your busy schedules to do your research and compare out the offers available in the market that will fit perfectly with your budget.

?How many scientists are in your government?? People asked me all sorts of things when I visited Moscow last year, but that simple question, and its expectation that naturally there should be many, made me pause. I knew of Russia's multimillion-dollar ?megagrant? investments to encourage expatriate researchers to work in the country and the around $11 billion set aside to gin up nanotechnology businesses. Visiting Doha, Qatar, I learned about that country's pursuit of a ?knowledge-based economy? and its aims to foster solar energy for desalination as well as telemedicine. At the annual Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in Germany, I saw nearly billboard-size portraits of science's eminent figures, celebrity-style. Clearly, many nations see science as their ticket to a better future.

I reflected on my own country's uneven relationship with science. Technological innovation is responsible for half the U.S.'s economic growth since World War II. It has been the engine of our modern prosperity. Yet today we are faltering in critical areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and in maintaining sufficient budgets for research. It was high time, I decided, that the U.S. started focusing on what matters.

With that ambitious goal, we began work on this issue's special report, ?State of the World's Science.? Executive editor Fred Guterl has organized an array of stories on the critical themes in global science today, from the rise of China to the manufacturing power of Germany to the best ways to encourage individual scientific achievement. Informational graphics highlight such features as research spending and the number of papers published in select journals. Turn to page 36 for the start of the section. As I hope you will agree, the result is thought-provoking?and inspiring.

    Swaziland Scientists

At the second annual Google Science Fair awards event, I had the privilege of bestowing trophies on the 14-year-old winners of the Scientific American?sponsored Science in Action Award. The award, for a project that helps a community with a social, health or environmental issue, is $50,000 and a year of mentoring to continue the work. Bonkhe Mahlalela and Sakhiwe Shongwe developed a simplified hydroponics system that uses 90 percent waste materials (cardboard boxes, sawdust, chicken manure) and improved productivity in crops tested by 140 percent. Believing that education and simple science can create self-sufficiency, they plan to use part of their prize money to train Swazi subsistence farmers. ?M.D.

Massive Arctic ice melt far surpasses previous record

This summer, melt pushed the sea ice back to 1.32 million square miles, according to the US National Snow & Ice Data Center, which tracks sea ice using satellite data.

On Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, Arctic sea-ice extent set a new record low that far surpasses the previous low set in 2007.

This summer's unprecedented melt for the icy white cap over Arctic waters appears to have come to a stop on Sunday, Sept. 16, setting a new record low for Arctic sea-ice extent that far surpasses the previous low set in 2007.

This summer, melt pushed the sea ice back to 1.32 million square miles (3.41 square kilometers), according to the U.S. National Snow & Ice Data Center, which tracks sea ice using satellite data.

"It definitely is a further indication that Arctic sea ice has become a lot more vulnerable and is in long-term decline," said Claire Parkinson, a senior scientist who studies climate at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

By comparison, on Sept. 18, 2007, Arctic sea-ice extent ? the area of ocean with at least 15 percent ice cover ? reached 1.61 square miles (4.17 square kilometers), NSIDC said. [8 Ways Global Warming Is Already Changing the World]

Arctic sea ice grows and shrinks in an annual cycle that follows the seasons. Summer melt comes to an end in September, when the ice reaches its annual low extent. Then colder temperatures cause the ice to reform through the winter.

The new record low didn't arrive out of nowhere. Satellite records, which go back to the late 1970s, show a long-term decline in the ice, Parkinson said.

More recently, the annual lows have shrunk below the longer-term average. The last six years have seen minimum sea-ice extents well below the average for 1979 to 2000, NSIDC data show. [10 Things to Know About Sea Ice] ?

Scientists who study sea ice have blamed a combination of natural fluctuations and human-caused warming for the increased loss of ice, although some differ as to how much humans have contributed, Parkinson said.

The fickle nature of weather plays an important role in ice extent in a given year. For instance, researchers believe?an intense storm over the central Arctic Ocean?in early August made a large contribution to this summer's unprecedented low.

Winds from the storm broke up the sea ice, and as a result, some ice was pushed farther south into warmer waters where it melted, meanwhile the remaining ice was buffeted by winds and waves, which contributed to its decay, Parkinson said.

"The individual years are affected a lot by whatever the weather is in those individual years," Parkinson said. Next year's sea-ice growth will be starting from a lower point than ever before. However, that doesn't guarantee another record low in September.

"If next year ends up with calm conditions and maybe not quite as warm then the ice cover could make a nice rebound," she said. "We really don't know about next year."

Longer-term changes, with at least some human fingerprints on them, are also underway.

The thicker, multi-year ice, which lasts through many seasonal melts, has been declining. This change can't be explained by natural fluctuations, Walt Meier a research scientist with the NSIDC told LiveScience. The thinner, younger ice is more vulnerable to warming and to storms like August?s, he has said.

The loss of ice creates a positive feedback loop, since ice reflects much of the sun's energy, while the darker ocean water absorbs it. The more water exposed, the more energy is absorbed. In recent years, unusually high sea-surface temperatures have been recorded in the Arctic Ocean, and these are linked, in part, to the loss of the reflective ice cover, according to the NSIDC.

Another factor contributing to melt is?black carbon, a type of soot released by the burning of fossil and other fuels. These particles fall on the ice, lowering its reflectivity and so accelerating its melt. But their contribution to the melt is not well understood, Meier told LiveScience in an email.

Sea-ice extent matters for a number of reasons. Because less sea ice means the oceans absorb more of the sun's energy, the decline in sea ice is expected to accelerate?the effects of global warming.

It also creates problems for animals, such as polar bears and?walruses, which depend on sea ice for habitat.

Nutrition As A Tool In Fitness MarketingBlast Email, Opt Email ...

Making people perspire with the exercises and routines you instruct them to perform is not the only objective of running a health and fitness centre. A holistic strategy is now utilised in modern-day fitness marketing where the emphasis is not on physical activity alone, but on diet and nutrition as well.

When people are not advised on their nutritional plans, the tendency is that they feel that eating less is always the best option when working out, especially when they are attempting to lose weight. High-intensity exercises are definitely not invitations to starve As a matter of fact, these are the instances when our bodies need more food to have an uninterrupted flow of nutrients that are needed for amplified metabolic demands. Starvation diets can cause extreme physical exhaustion because you deprive your body of glucose to fuel its functions. The subsequent fatigue disturbs normal day-to-day functions and dampen efforts in performing exercises. It also contributes to mood swings, body pains, drowsiness, intellectual declines, vitamin insufficiencies, and certain medical ailments.

A healthy and consistent diet plan draws wide-ranging nutrition from the several food groups within calorie limits. Diet and physical activity must complement each other, depending on an individual?s fitness goals. A nutrition plan lacking in carbohydrates, for example, is not a good idea for an individual training for a marathon who runs a lot of miles each day because his type of exercise burns more. Persons who lift weights for muscle building need food choices that are loaded with protein. Building muscle mass and muscle tissue repair become more effective with proteins. Low-glycemic diets are for people who want to lose extra weight. Low-glycemic foods are more satisfying than high-glycemic foods since they take a longer time to be absorbed, thus making a person feel full for a longer time and decreasing his inclination to overindulge. Low-fat, low-sodium, and low-cholesterol eating plans are also good for people who exercise to keep their hearts healthier.

A holistic gym promotion technique should concentrate on different facets of your client?s health to make his individual fitness goals more feasible. Valuable customers will feel your guidance in all of their efforts. Employing a nutrition expert to sit down and plan meals with clients in your gym is a great investment. Exercising alone can be ineffective without the proper nutrients that enable the person to perform at his best. If you have extra resources, you may also put up a mini diner inside your health club where clients may avail of pre-set and individualised meals to save them from the hassle of preparing food by themselves.
