SMITHFIELD, N.C. ? A 180-foot communications tower damaged by wind in Smithfield has been dismantled and about a dozen residents have been allowed to return home.
A tower near the intersections of U.S. Highways 70 and 301 was damaged by high winds Thursday afternoon. Authorities said a cable on the tower had snapped, leaving the tower swaying when firefighters arrived.
Fire Capt. Bentley Powell says crews dismantled the tower in 30-foot segments to get it safely on the ground Friday morning.
A fast food restaurant was allowed to open early Friday and the evacuated residents were told it was safe to go home.
