Here are some news highlights on sustainability issues, from new developments in animal agriculture to food taxes and U.S. Department of Defense climate change planning.

?Sodexo Reinforces Animal Welfare Commitment with Phase-Out of Gestation Stalls,? The Humane Society of the United States (July 12, 2012)

The Humane Society of the United States reported on Sodexo?s commitment to work with its pork suppliers to phase out the use of gestation crates in the production process by 2022.? Gestation crates, or sow stalls, ?confine pigs to such an extreme state that the animals are virtually immobilized for nearly their entire lives,? explained Wayne Wacelle, President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States.? Sodexo is addressing this animal welfare issue by calling on its suppliers to provide detailed plans for eliminating gestation crates at farms they own and operate, as well as their contracted pork operations, by 2017.

?EBay Plans Data Center That Will Run on Alternative Energy Fuel Cells? The New York Times (June 20, 2012)

The New York Times published an article on eBay?s plans to build a data center run entirely on alternative energy fuel cells to handle its billions of dollars in retail transactions. This marks eBay as the first major tech company to use alternative power as a primary source for energy-hungry data centers. The on-site fuel cells, provided by Bloom Energy, will supply the data center located in South Jordan, Utah, with about six million watts of power.

?NYC Mayor Bloomberg?s War on Obesity,? CBS News (May 31, 2012)

CBS News covered Mayor Michael Bloomberg?s war on obesity in New York City. The effort isn?t entirely new: In 2008, the mayor banned trans fats from city restaurants and required calorie listings on menus at chain restaurants. His latest mission is to ban oversized soft drinks at restaurants, movie theatres and concession stands. ?Obesity is killing 5,000 people a year in New York City,? noted Bloomberg in the interview. The mayor?s proposal is still controversial, but Bloomberg is looking to learn from his past initiatives: In 2003, Bloomberg blocked sugary drinks from vending machines in city schools. The health commissioner reported a 5% reduction in obesity rates of kids at those schools in the last four years.

?U.S. Military Forges Ahead with Plans to Combat Climate Change,? Scientific American (April 2, 2012)

The U.S. Navy SEALs will be outfitted with $2 million of new solar technology gear next year. This article in Scientific American notes that the military?s long-term goal is to make the elite forces net zero-energy and net zero-water use, part of an overall effort by the U.S. Department of Defense to reduce its climate impact and dependence on fossil fuels as a military strategy.

?How the US Drought Will Affect Global Food Prices,? Business Insider (July 20, 2012)

Severe drought in the United States is the key driver of the rapid increase in crop prices, but Barclays Capital claims it should not trigger global food inflation as it has in the past.? The Business Insider reports that production costs are being offset by lower freight and energy costs, which better positions emerging markets to cope with higher-than average food prices.

Sodexo congratulates campuses named to The Princeton Review?s 2012 Guide to Green Colleges

In June, The Princeton Review announced its 2012 Guide to Green Colleges list, naming 89 Sodexo-served colleges and universities (accounting for more than 25% of the schools listed) among the nation?s most environmentally responsible colleges. Four Sodexo-served schools made the list?s Green College Honor Roll, earning a 99 Green Rating ? the year?s top score.

The annual list profiles institutions of higher education in the U.S. and Canada that demonstrate notable commitments to sustainability in their academic offerings, activities, career preparation and campus infrastructure ? including dining services.

National Restaurant Association awards Sodexo Future Chefs program Innovator of the Year Award

In late May, our Sodexo Future Chefs program won the Innovator of the Year Award in the Menu Development category at the National Restaurant Association?s inaugural Operator Innovations Awards ceremony in Chicago. The program allows students at Sodexo-served schools to learn about healthy food choices by creating and submitting their own recipes to Sodexo?s student nutrition experts as part of a nationwide contest. Sodexo also earned recognition in two additional categories: Our Did You Know Caf?, which is designed to make the cafeteria an extension of the classroom for middle and junior high school students, was a finalist in the Health and Nutrition category, and Sodexo?s industry-leading ISO 22000:2005 Food Safety Management System certification was selected as a finalist in the Food Safety category.

Sodexo manager earns top recognition from Practice Greenhealth

Sodexo?s own James Gartner, Environmental Services Operations Manager at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, Minnesota, was recently selected as a winner of Practice Greenhealth?s Partners for Change Award. The award, honoring both James and the Fairview Ridges Hospital, recognizes proven success in improving environmental performance and dedication to a high standard of sustainability. Both James and Fairview Ridges Hospital were honored May 2 at the 2012 CleanMed conference in Denver, Colorado.

Sodexo client Binghamton University Dining Services earns innovation recognition

The National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) has recognized Binghamton University Dining Services for one of the most innovative nutrition programs in the country. The university?s NourishU with Alexa program earned BU a second place award. The program, conceptualized by BU Dining Services? Registered Dietitian, Alexa Schmidt, and executed in conjunction with Sodexo?s on-site team, incorporates elements of education, demonstration and interaction to help BU?s nearly 15,000 students learn how to eat healthily and sustainably.

Sodexo manager recognized by client site

Lily Lee, Sodexo general manager at Sharp Electronics in Mahwah, New Jersey, was recognized for effective integration of sustainability initiatives in the Sharp NJ cafeteria at the site?s Earth Day celebrations on April 20. Over the last three years, Lily has executed numerous sustainability initiatives to benefit the environment, the community and the nearly 375 Sharp employees who dine in the cafeteria. Projects included donating leftovers to a local charity to stock pantries in churches and homeless shelters, switching from disposable to recyclable containers that Sodexo washes and stores for customers, and offering a 10-cent discount for mug reuse. Plans to implement the Sodexo SMART tool will surely help Sharp find further opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of its cafeteria.
