TomTom for Android has been an awfully long time coming. Having been available on iOS now for a number of years, the global satellite navigation giant has been somewhat tardy in bringing it to Android. But, it's officially official now, we're getting it on Android in October. The biggest question still remains the same though -- why buy this on an OS that comes with a perfectly good satellite navigation system built in for free? We went hands on at IFA 2012 in Berlin to see if maybe we could answer that. 

First things first, TomTom is a really nice looking application. The interface is well designed -- and by that we mean it's designed as if this were a stand alone TomTom device. One of the not so great points about Google Maps Navigation is that the in app menus are still designed like a smartphone app. TomTom has some really large, bold icons that make for simple use in the car. 

All the necessary information is present too, speed, distance to destination, arrival time as you would expect from an app such as this. Also available is HD traffic, which during the demonstration showed just how bad an idea driving in Berlin in the afternoon can be. Speed camera locations are also available in TomTom -- not that anyone at AC speeds anywhere, ever -- and the locations are community built. For example, if you drive past a location not registered and you come across a mobile speed camera, by tapping the relevant icon you can report this information back for inclusion in the database. 

The demo unit also shows the universal TomTom docking system in action. This is perfect for use with an Android smartphone, as it has adjustable arms to suit the differing sizes of devices. It also has a microUSB charging facility so there's still only need to have one device plugged into the cigarette lighter socker. 

We're going to have to wait until October though to really get to grips with TomTom for Android. No matter how good it may look on a show floor, real world performance is what matters here. There are definitely features in TomTom which is going to make it justifiable for regular drivers over something like Google Maps Navigation, but price is going to play a big part in that decision. 

And as yet, we still don't know that price. TomTom informed us that the pricing information will be announced at launch, but that it will be available in Google Play in markets around the world sometime in October. It does feel like a full on TomTom navigation system though, and with an application available for a smartphone, it makes you wonder how long the stand alone systems will continue to sell. S.Africa charges miners with murder of fellow strikers

Arrested Lonmin mine workers were on Thursday charged with the murder of 34 striking colleagues who were shot dead by South African police on August 16 during a strike over wages.

"The court today charged all the workers with murder, under the common purpose law," spokesman for the prosecutor's office Frank Lesenyego said.

Police opened fire on striking workers at the Marikana mine after a stand-off had already led to the death of 10 people including two police officers.

Following the shootings, 270 workers were arrested.

All the men were in custody and the state postponed the case until Thursday of next week to allow for further investigations.

Lesenyego said details of the murder charges would be revealed during the bail hearing.

One expert, however, questioned the charges.

"In charging the miners for the death of miners killed by the police, I don't see how common purpose doctrine could be used here," said Vincent Nmehille, a law professor at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Police have defended the shootings at the mine outside Rustenburg, northwest of Johannesburg, as self-defence.

The incident was the worst day of police violence in South Africa since the end of white-minority apartheid rule in 1994.

"But it also means adjusting its rhetoric and policies on immigration," the board continues. "A cranky, crabbed view of immigration sends a cultural message that the GOP doesn't welcome minority voters, and it contradicts the themes of optimism and growth that appeal to most voters."

Ana Navarro, who served as Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) Hispanic outreach director during his 2008 presidential bid, told HuffPost's Howard Fineman Monday that the Romney campaign seems to be doing little to reach out to Latino voters.

"Whatever the Romney campaign is doing isn't visible to the naked eye," Navarro said. "They don't know the community -- and what they do know, they don't seem to like."

The Romney campaign does have a few Latino outreach structures in place, and airs ads in Spanish. But it doesn't seem to be helping much: polls consistently show President Barack Obama with a significant lead over Mitt Romney among Latino voters.

A poll released Monday by Latino Decisions and ImpreMedia found Latino voters believe Democrats are doing a better job reaching out to them. Only 14 percent said Republicans are doing a good job with Latino outreach, while 56 percent said the party doesn't seem to care. By comparison, 59 percent said Democrats are doing a good job in that area.

Building blocks of life found around young star

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? A team of astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) has spotted sugar molecules in the gas surrounding a young Sun-like star. This is the first time sugar been found in space around such a star, and the discovery shows that the building blocks of life are in the right place, at the right time, to be included in planets forming around the star.

The astronomers found molecules of glycolaldehyde -- a simple form of sugar [1] -- in the gas surrounding a young binary star, with similar mass to the Sun, called IRAS 16293-2422. Glycolaldehyde has been seen in interstellar space before [2], but this is the first time it has been found so near to a Sun-like star, at distances comparable to the distance of Uranus from the Sun in the Solar System. This discovery shows that some of the chemical compounds needed for life existed in this system at the time of planet formation [3].

"In the disc of gas and dust surrounding this newly formed star, we found glycolaldehyde, which is a simple form of sugar, not much different to the sugar we put in coffee," explains Jes J?rgensen (Niels Bohr Institute, Denmark), the lead author of the paper. "This molecule is one of the ingredients in the formation of RNA, which -- like DNA, to which it is related -- is one of the building blocks of life."

The high sensitivity of ALMA -- even at the technically challenging shortest wavelengths at which it operates -- was critical for these observations, which were made with a partial array of antennas during the observatory's Science Verification phase [4].

"What it is really exciting about our findings is that the ALMA observations reveal that the sugar molecules are falling in towards one of the stars of the system," says team member Cecile Favre (Aarhus University, Denmark). "The sugar molecules are not only in the right place to find their way onto a planet, but they are also going in the right direction."

The gas and dust clouds that collapse to form new stars are extremely cold [5] and many gases solidify as ice on the particles of dust where they then bond together and form more complex molecules. But once a star has been formed in the middle of a rotating cloud of gas and dust, it heats the inner parts of the cloud to around room temperature, evaporating the chemically complex molecules, and forming gases that emit their characteristic radiation as radio waves that can be mapped using powerful radio telescopes such as ALMA.

IRAS 16293-2422 is located around 400 light-years away, comparatively close to Earth, which makes it an excellent target for astronomers studying the molecules and chemistry around young stars. By harnessing the power of a new generation of telescopes such as ALMA, astronomers now have the opportunity to study fine details within the gas and dust clouds that are forming planetary systems.

"A big question is: how complex can these molecules become before they are incorporated into new planets? This could tell us something about how life might arise elsewhere, and ALMA observations are going to be vital to unravel this mystery," concludes Jes J?rgensen.

The work is described in a paper to appear in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), an international astronomy facility, is a partnership of Europe, North America and East Asia in cooperation with the Republic of Chile. ALMA is funded in Europe by the European Southern Observatory (ESO), in North America by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) in cooperation with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and the National Science Council of Taiwan (NSC) and in East Asia by the National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS) of Japan in cooperation with the Academia Sinica (AS) in Taiwan. ALMA construction and operations are led on behalf of Europe by ESO, on behalf of North America by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), which is managed by Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI) and on behalf of East Asia by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ). The Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) provides the unified leadership and management of the construction, commissioning and operation of ALMA.

[1] Sugar is the common name for a range of small carbohydrates (molecules containing carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, typically with a hydrogen:oxygen atomic ratio of 2:1, as in water). Glycolaldehyde has the chemical formula C2H4O2. The sugar commonly used in food and drink is sucrose, which is a larger molecule than glycolaldehyde, and another example of this set of compounds.

[2] Glycolaldehyde has been detected in two places in space so far -- first towards the Galactic Centre cloud Sgr B2, [using the National Science Foundation's (NSF) 12 Meter Telescope at Kitt Peak (USA) in 2000][1], and [with the NSF's Robert C. [3] Accurate laboratory measurements of the characteristic wavelengths of radio waves emitted by glycolaldehyde were critical for the team's identification of the molecule in space. In addition to the glycolaldehyde, IRAS 16293-2422 is also known to harbour a number of other complex organic molecules, including ethylene glycol, methyl formate and ethanol.

[4] Early scientific observations with a partial array of antennas began in 2011 (see[ eso1137][4]). Both before and after this, a range of Science Verification observations have been performed to demonstrate that ALMA is capable of producing data of the required quality, and the data produced have been made publicly available. The results described here use some of these Science Verification data. Construction of ALMA will be completed in 2013, when 66 high-precision antennas will be fully operational.

[5] They are usually around 10 degrees above absolute zero: about -263 degrees Celsius.

Edifier Prisma e3350BT 2.1 Bluetooth Audio System

As Bluetooth wireless audio streaming continues to increase its presence in portable speaker docks and headphones, it's now finding its way into less likely areas, such as speaker systems intended for computers. The Edifier Prisma e3350BT 2.1 Bluetooth Audio System, at $129.99 (direct) , is reasonably priced for a quality 2.1 PC speaker system?add in the Bluetooth streaming capabilities and it's a potential steal. However, while its overall sonic performance is balanced, with a subtle bass presence, a rattling subwoofer frame and some other odd design choices make that price seem more in line with its overall capabilities.

Design
The sleek 2.1 Prisma speaker system comes in white, silver, or, like our model, black, with the two matte plastic satellite speaker frames measuring 9.2 by 1.8 by 4.7 inches. On the front panels, cloth speaker grilles hide a 2.75-inch mid-range driver and a 0.75-inch silk dome tweeter on each speaker. The 30-watt subwoofer features a 5-inch, downward-firing driver. It features the same matte black plastic and vaguely-triangular theme, measuring 7.83 by 9.76 by 11.57 inches, with an under-lit Power button that mimics the status lighting of the under-lit Volume knob on the wired remote.

The sub is the heart of the system with the wired controller, the two satellite speakers, the power supply, and an optional wired 3.5mm input all connected to its rear panel. Unfortunately, all these cables can be a bit cumbersome, and some, like the cable that connects to both satellites, seem a bit short if you wish to keep the sub on the floor and out of sight. Having the power button on the floor-sitting subwoofer is also a bit annoying.

The connected controller has a large metallic Volume dial, but no Power button or track navigation buttons. The Bass level control is hidden on the back of the sub?it's not adjustable from the remote itself. Despite having basically no purpose other than adjusting the volume, the control manages to redeem itself with the inclusion of an extra 3.5mm aux input and a headphone jack. It seems, however, that all of these things could easily have been placed on one of the satellite speakers without making the design hideous, thus eliminating the need for the wired controller altogether and making the entire system a bit more manageable. Edifier, however visually alluring its products may be, is no stranger to odd design choices?the recently reviewed Edifier Spinnaker ?has an annoying cable connection port that makes set up a little frustrating.

The Prisma is armed with Bluetooth version 2.1+EDR, and supports the A2DP codec. Pairing with a Bluetooth sound source is a quick and simple process, and like most Bluetooth systems, the range of the speakers is roughly 30 feet.

Performance
At top volumes, the Prisma 2.1 system has some trouble handling tracks with really deep bass, like the Knife's "Silent Shout." The issue, however, is not really about distortion?the signal sounds mostly clean. The problem is the actual vibrations from the deep bass, which make the subwoofer's frame rattle and sound as?if?it were distorting heavily. This seems to only occur at top volumes, however, and only on tracks with serious low end (The Edifier Spinnaker also suffers from this issue.) At reasonable volumes, the Prisma conveys most tracks with a subtle low-end presence. It is neither over-the-top nor anemic, even when the bass level is maxed out on the sub.

This balanced approach benefits most musical genres. On classical tracks like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," the speakers let the mid and high frequencies shine, with an emphasis on clarity. The sub's presence is subtle, even at maximum bass level, lending a bit of depth to the brass, large percussion, and lower register strings. The system's overall focus is skewed towards the mid and high range instruments, allowing for nice clarity and texture in the higher strings and wooden percussion hits.

Bill Callahan's vocals on his latest record,?Apocalypse, are delivered with a smooth low-end presence, paired with a crisp edge in the high-mids, while the kick drum has a nice, punchy presence. This has as much to do with the subwoofer's low-end boost as it does the satellites' pleasing mid-range clarity, resulting in a lively bass drum pedal attack followed by a pleasantly rounded-out resonance.

This same mid range clarity creates a ferocious sound when applied to the attack of the thumping beat on Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild," which also benefits from the sub's presence, but again, in a subtle way. This is more of a flat response system that many 2.1 speaker systems tend to be?and it is certainly not a system for bass fiends.

For $130, the Prisma delivers a clean sound at moderate volumes, with just enough low-end to please. Its Bluetooth streaming is solid, and it's hard to discern much of a difference between the wireless stream and a wired signal from the same sound source, though sometimes the wired signal seems to provide a little more deep bass presence.The annoying design choices and rattling sub may keep the Prisma from greatness, but it's still a solid choice in this price range.

If you're not hooked on a wireless system, the $170 Harman Kardon SoundSticks III, an Editors' Choice, is another visually pleasing 2.1-channel speaker system that offers a bit more thump from the subwoofer and similar clarity in the high frequencies. If Bluetooth is your main priority, but you'd prefer a docking system that can charge your iPod or iPhone, as well, the JBL OnBeat Xtreme ?is another Editors' Choice, but it is significantly more expensive. Finally, if all of these suggestions are out of your range and you're looking for a more affordable PC speaker system, the Energy Power EM-2.1 ?is not wireless, but it's about as affordable as speakers get while maintaining any sense of musical quality.

Biden postpones Tampa campaign event next week

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Joe Biden on Friday postponed a campaign trip to Tampa, Florida that had been scheduled for next week on the same day as Republicans open their presidential nominating convention in the city.

An Obama campaign announcement said Biden will not attend events on Monday in Tampa, where the Republican National Convention is being held, due to security concerns.

The campaign said it wants to ensure that all emergency resources are focused on Tropical Storm Isaac, which could impact Florida during the convention.

"This change in schedule is being taken out of an abundance of caution to ensure that all local law enforcement and emergency management resources can stay focused," the campaign said in a press release.

President Barack Obama captured Florida when he won the White House in 2008, but Republicans want their week-long convention to boost their profile in the key battleground state.

The campaign announcement did not detail which events Biden will keep on his schedule later in the week. He is scheduled to be in Orlando and St. Augustine, Florida on Tuesday.

Merck to seek approval for two cardiovascular drugs in '13

(Reuters) - Merck & Co said on Sunday it plans to file regulatory applications for a new type of blood clot preventer next year, and will also file with regulators for approval of another cardiovascular drug in 2013.

The pharmaceutical company said in a statement that it is in discussions with regulatory agencies over vorapaxar, a drug that has been dogged by bleeding concerns since January 2011, when a safety committee overseeing a large study said the new type of anti-platelet drug was not appropriate for patients who had suffered a stroke.

It plans to file the application with regulators in the United States and Europe in 2013.

Merck said it will "seek an indication for the prevention of cardiovascular events in patients with a history of heart attack" and no history of stroke.

Merck obtained vorapaxar through its $41 billion acquisition of rival Schering Plough in late 2009. At the time, it was considered to be the crown jewel of Schering Plough's drug pipeline.

Regarding a cardiovascular drug called MK-524A (tredaptive), Merck said its study is on track to be completed later this year and it plans to file for approval in the United States and the EU in 2013.

Merck said studies for anacetrapib are also on track to be completed in 2017. Oxford researchers, which are leading the study, have already enrolled 20,000 patients, in what is one of the largest cardiovascular studies ever conducted. The study started in 2011.

Merck shares closed on Friday up 31 cents at $43.12.

Senior officials at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) have concluded that a major chimpanzee research centre did not violate the biomedical agency?s breeding moratorium, despite 130 infants being born at the centre to NIH-owned parents between 2000 and 2010 (see 'Lab bred chimps despite ban').

The assessment, carried out by the NIH?s Office of Extramural Research and obtained by Nature under the US Freedom of Information Act, argues that the New Iberia Research Center (NIRC), part of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, did not violate the 17-year-old moratorium for two reasons. First, its 3?4% mortality rate during the period matched those of other NIH-supported chimpanzee centers. Second, the centre did not make additional charges to the NIH as a result of the births.

?Based on?a decrease in census and no increase in cost?NIRC has not violated the [NIH] moratorium,? the document states. It also argues that the NIRC?s contraception program ? which it says led to a 13% average annual conception rate in the years leading up to 2010, down from 50% in 1995 ? ?is within acceptable limits? for preventing pregnancy in the federally owned colony. It notes that the NIRC has assumed ownership of the infants, as is required under its written agreement with the NIH.

The Louisiana centre houses approximately 350 chimpanzees, of which the NIH owns 111. The agency pays the centre more than US$1 million a year to maintain its own animals and to support about 100 other chimps. Because of the high costs of lifetime maintenance of chimpanzees, the NIH has had a breeding moratorium in place since 1995. During the period in question, the NIRC used contraceptive methods that included: housing males and females separately when social groupings allowed; performing vasectomies on selected males; and using the implantable progestin Norplant and intrauterine devices.

Ongoing efforts
James Blanchard, the interim director of the NIRC, said in an email this week that the NIRC?s conception rate for the past two years has been less than 1%. This, he wrote, ?is a reflection of our ongoing efforts to provide responsible management of the NIH chimpanzee colony.?

But Kathleen Conlee, vice-president for animal-research issues at the Humane Society of the United States, which first learned of the births through public-records laws, says that the criteria used by the NIH to determine whether the ban was breached ? whether the center?s costs or total census increased ? are ?unacceptable?. ?How NIH has interpreted whether the NIRC bred chimpanzees is very misleading,? she says. ?It should be based on whether breeding occurred.?

Conlee notes that an NIH working group is now determining criteria for the agency?s funding of future chimpanzee research, responding to a report made last year by the US Institute of Medicine that concluded that invasive research is largely unnecessary. In addition, Congress is considering a bill that would end invasive research in great apes (see 'Bill to end US chimp research advances'). In this context, Conlee says, NIH officials ?are driven to not appear as if they weren?t properly monitoring the situation?.

But Gregory Kaebnick, a bioethicist at the Hastings Center in Garrison, New York, says that the drop in the reproduction rate during the moratorium indicates that ?the chimps were breeding, but the NIRC arguably was not breeding them?.

However, he adds, ?Though what NIH is doing here is comprehensible, within the letter of the law, there?s a certain amount of foot-dragging. Ultimately, they need to come to terms with the larger ethical debate.?

China's state-run media has presented Gu's prosecution as evidence that nobody is above the law as the Communist party attempts to resolve the crisis before its once-in-a-decade leadership transition at a party congress this year.

But Chinese web users on Monday angrily denounced the decision to spare Gu execution, contrasting her fate with that of a vegetable seller sentenced to death in 2009 for the murder of two officials.

Analysts say it remains unclear whether people will accept the verdict in a case that critics say was decided well before any evidence was presented in court, in order to minimise embarrassment for the party.

"The damage (from the Bo case) is already very, very severe, so it is really now a case of damage control," said Cheng Li, an expert in Chinese politics at the Brookings Institution in Washington.

"But of course the whole thing is not over yet, as we are still waiting to see Bo Xilai dealt with, and that will be very, very crucial coming into the party congress."

Bo was sacked as Chongqing party secretary in March, before being removed from the powerful 25-member Politburo and placed under investigation for violating party discipline -- usually code for corruption.

He enjoyed strong public support during his tenure as party chief of the southwestern city for a tough crackdown on graft and organised crime that saw scores of officials detained and executed.

But critics saw the campaign as an attempt by Bo to win promotion, amid accusations that judicial procedures were routinely flouted to secure convictions.

Bo's right-hand man in Chongqing, Wang Lijun, who first raised the alarm over Gu's involvement in Heywood's death and is now facing trial, is suspected of having used torture to extract confessions.

"The most severe crime is murder, the second is Bo creating his own political party and personality in Chongqing," said Li of the scandal that brought down Bo, who has not been directly implicated in the murder.

"The third area will be corruption, but there is also a fourth area, which could potentially be more serious than corruption, and that is the police brutality, the abuse of power and the torture."

Four Chongqing police officers were Monday convicted of trying to conceal Heywood's murder to protect Gu, raising the possibility that Bo could be implicated in a cover-up and face criminal prosecution.
