Notre Dame football: Kelly makes it official, names Golson starting QB

In the end, it was a decision that surprised virtually no one. All Notre Dame head football coach Brian Kelly did was make official what had been percolating for more than a week.

That sophomore Everett Golson would be the starting quarterback for the Irish when they kick off their 2012 season Sept. 1 in Dublin, Ireland, against Navy.

?Lots of practice, lots of film, lots of evaluation,? Kelly said of what led him to this decision. ?He won the job. He made great improvement.

?It was a tough decision, but Everett clearly won the starting job. If things go the way we?re planning it, he?ll play the whole game.?

Kelly announced two other starter berths ? both with significantly more mystery to them:

Freshman KeiVarae Russell will start at quarterback, replacing projected junior starter Lo Wood, who underwent season-ending knee surgery Wednesday.

Freshman Davonte? Neal will be ND?s primary punt returner. Last season, the Irish used Theo Riddick, John Goodman and Michael Floyd in that role.
